Default Getting Around in Provence

I'd like to know where I can search for and purchase detailed
driving road maps from Aix to surrounding villages (Luberon/St. Remy
Les Baux/Arles and Salon.
If we fly into the Marseille Airport is there a shuttle bus or regular
bus to Aix? or what would a cab cost?

When renting a car in Aix what should one know ahead of time and is it
better to rent by the day or the week. Any suggestions for a
Hotel/pool (3Star)near City Center. We are not going until next year
(September) but I would like to get started on it now.

Any information would be great

You need the Michelin maps.

I would think any good book store would sell them.
If not, wait until you get to Marseille airport: they will certainly
have them.

You might want to surf around at the airports website:
http://www.marseille.aeroport.fr/
According to this site, among the shops at the airport there is a tabac/presse
shop. You will probably find all the road maps you need over there. If not, buy
them at the huge supermarkets you will find in the outskirt industreal areas of
all towns.

There's a regular bus service briging you to Aix-en-Provence in just 15 minutes.

I find the michelin yellow maps 1:200000 scale?) ideal. Map 81
Avignon-Dignes seems to cover some of the area you want and 84 (Marseilles?)
the rest

Michelin maps are excellent. Look at map 245.

There is excellent bus service from Marseille to Aix. The word "navette"
(shuttle) is part of the name, but the buses are full-sized comfortable
buses. The buses have luggage storage compartments accessible from the
outside, but I did not see anyone use them on our ride. We -- and
seemingly everyone else -- were merely day trippers to Marseille.

The buses leave approximately every 10 minutes from the train station in
Marseille. The bus ride will deposit you at a point on the Avenue des
Belges not far from the Cours Mirabeau. The cost was sightly more than 4
Euros per person.

You'll need to take a taxi from the airport to the bus station in
Marseille. If you're already planning on renting a car in Aix, why not
rent it at Marseille Airport to deal with the issue of getting to Aix?

By the end of our day and evening in Marseille, we weren't in the mood
to take the shuttle back to Aix so we took a taxi. The starting point
from our taxi ride was the taxi stand near the Information Center at the
Old Port of Marseille, but our price of 40 Euros will give you a sense
of the cost from the airport.

I know your trip is a long way off, but I would pay attention to the
French strike situation as the months tick away. Both on strike days and
on the days following a strike, the flights into/out of the airport in
Marseille were more heavily impacted than flights into/out of the
airport in Nice.

The Hotel Aquabella is a *** moderately-priced, modern hotel utterly
devoid of personality. On the plus side, the hotel is clean, with many
amenities (including a swimming pool), and -- above all -- wonderfully
located. The rear of the hotel is on one of the tiny twisted streets
comprising the medieval town. It takes about 15 minutes walking
leisurely to get from the hotel to the Cours Mirabeau. This makes
nightly strolling and access to the shops, markets, and restaurants a
joy. The front of the hotel is on one of the wide roads which replaced
the city walls so driving and parking is very easy.

As mentioned, Michelin maps are good and widely available. I suggest their
Green Guide to Provence to go with it. The most detailed maps, showing a
very small area, are quite useful if you're staying outside the large
cities. You can find a much larger selection of such maps at www.amazon.fr
if you can handle surfing in French.

If you're staying longer than 17 days, you can rent a car tax free direction
from Renault,

I don't think you can still buy these maps. At least, last summer, I didn't find
them anymore.
I gues they 've been replaced by maps covering a larger area, available at
scales 1:200.000 and 1:150.000. IMH, the last one does not give more details.

Start here
http://catalogue.viamichelin.com/eng...ue/accueil.htm
Select France which should take you here
http://catalogue.viamichelin.com/eng...ype_rattacheme
nt=LI&lieu=P01&langue=2
From the drop down select region go to Provence-Alpes-Cote d'azur which
should go here:
http://catalogue.viamichelin.com/eng...ype_rattacheme
nt=LI&lieu=R21&mmmmmmmmmm=ppppppp&langue=2
It seems there are now three forms of map "Regional" and "Local". The ones
I referred to previously are the local (1:150000) ones but the regional
(1:200000) may be more convenient. However, I'd guess the "Zoom" of
Avignon/Marseilles etc is what you want (1:160000)

As someone else has already said a green guide is something I would highly
recommend.

Do the strikes affect bus service, e.g. Cote D'Azur busses from the
Nice airport to Cannes? Thanks.

Mercure Paul Cezanne is very nice (traditional as opposed to chain like)
it is central but quiet.

We made a trip from Aix to Marseille one of the days of the strike. The
bus company which runs the shuttle between those two cities was sticking
to its regular schedule of 10-minute intervals in the morning runs, but
was uncertain as to what would happen later in the day. We never found
out what happened since we indulged in a taxi back to Aix at the end of
a very, very long day.

Sorry, I can't help you out with respect to the Cote a'Azur buses.

I don't know when the original message was posted, as it's not on my server,
but the strikes are over for the moment. Even when they were taking place,
the intercity buses between Nice and Cannes were running, as were the direct
airport busses via the toll road, although the schedules were a bit messed
up and there were more than the usual amounts of people on board.
