Default Germany-more questions

The comforts of home, for me, are Diet Coke, Kleenex with lotion, Wet
Wipes,...your basic Walmart supplies. I hear they have Walmart there
now. Regardless of one's feelings about american sprawl, my plan of
attack on arrival is to go shopping and fill the trunk of the car with
supplies for 10days. Given my addiction to caffeine, the Diet Coke is
essential. Are products like this readily available? Do they have the
plastic pop bottles with screw on lids that carry so well in a purse
after having been opened?

You will find all the above items readily available there. Germany is really
quite civilized. They make the BMW and Mercedes Benz there and you might
recall a rather forward thinking rocket scientist from there named Wernher
Von Braun who pretty much fathered the USA's space program.
Your Diet Coke is there but they call it Coca-Cola Lite but tragically Diet
Pepsi is hard to find.

Have fun.

Yes. It's called Coke Light.

Certainly. With recent change in legislation requiring big deposit for
non-returnable metal cans, most soft drinks are now sold in returnable
bottles. You pay a small deposit ('Pfand') and you get it back when you
return it, not necessarily where you bought it.

A great contributor for sure... but Robert Goddard is the father of all
modern rocket propulsion... That's why there is a 'Goddard Space Flight
Center.'

Thank you for your replies--sounds like I won't go into withdrawal :-)

The language difference doesn't intimidate me nearly as much as the
unforseen, unplanned on factors. Another comfort of home is a shower in
the morning-when camping I would willingly drive 20miles in the morning
in order to have that shower!. I understand I want to ask for "ein
Zimmer" but how do I word the "mit" part for shower?

You will notice, however, that CocaCola Light tastes different from Diet
Coke. It's slightly more perfumey. And yes, you can get twist-off
plasticky bottles of it, in quite a range of sizes including some rather
large. You can get the pop at any large beverage depot too--along with
sundry other potables by the case.

You may not find a Wal-mart everywhere, but you will be able to find all
the products you mentioned--either American brands or German equivalents
(unless you look for American processed cheese-food, peanut butter or
grape jelly.) Hard to find is "good" orange juice--not from
concentrate. (Elvita brand OJ is good)

You do not have to fill your trunk upon arrival because there are good
supermarkets everywhere.

Re: mit-- for a single room with shower, ask for "Einzelzimmer mit
Dusche." for a double room, ask for "Doppelzimmer mit Dusche."

Have a great time in beautiful Germany!

Walmart in Germany isn't a big success story so far.
Don't expect there exactly the same things like at home. Walmart Germany
only stocks things German customers buy.
Diet Coke and Kleenex are available. No need to search a Walmart for this.
You can get these things at a Schlecker market in many villages as well.

Germany is certainly not the most distant place to compared the US - but
there are differences.
Shopping is e.g. no big pastime for Germans. But walking is. Icy drinks are
considered unhealthy, and a coke with more ice cubes than coke is seen as
fraud.
If you expect anything like at home, I don't think that you will really
enjoy your vacation.
Travelling abroad is about new experiences (and in this context Germany is
for beginners, i.e. without real risk or too unpleasant surprises).

Yes, except that the product name is "Coca Cola Light". Kleenex and similar
tissues ("Zewa" is am ore popular brand) are widely available, but what is
"Kleenex with Lotion"? I have no idea what "Wet Wipes" might be. If you can
describe that, maybe someone can tell the correspondant product name in
Germany. Whatever, you don't need to shop at Walmart, any super market will
do. Walmart isn't that widespread anyway.

Yes, with sizes up to 2 liters. You need a big purse for those.

"Pepsi Light".

For those who enjoy a cultural experience, shop around for German cola
brands, such as Afri Cola, Club Cola (Eastern), or some of the cheapo
brands such as "Trendy Cola" etc.

To say that Germany is quite civilized is an understatement. In three trips to
that country, I had only one meal with which I was disappointed. While hotel
and restaurant prices tend to be a little higher than here, quality is extremely
high.

Why go looking for a Wal-Mart? You can load up on the kinds of things
you mention without leaving the airport!!

Ahh, but romance is the reason we want to travel there. :-) Isn't it
true that we are criticised if we don't attempt to use the language?
While I am aware that English is taught in school there, I am also aware
of how fast I forgot the german I learned here, and it must work both
ways. The other day on the phone I heard someone say "Ja, Ja, Macht
das!" I spent several hours wondering what he was making until I
realized that was the slang version of the sarcastic english "Yeah,
Yeah, You do that!" :-)
