I will give you an example. I had the bright idea to get to the London
Docklands Light Railway (DLR) at the Bank Underground station, with my
bags. You go down some stairs and more stairs, a long tunnel. Up some stairs,
down a long escalator (relief for a few seconds). Another long tunnel. Down
some stairs. Down some more stairs. Up some stairs another tunnel, and down
some stairs. Yippee we are there. I was pretty bushed, didnt know anything
was that complicated, I must have walked for 10 mins, with heavy bags,
the stairs were the absolute worst part (along with people knocking into you).

Why did I do this. Well needed to get to the London Center by Limehouse DLR
station. Intended to take the train to Blackfriars from Gatwick, but missed
it and took the Victoria train. Then had the bright idea to see some sights
in London and take the No#11 bus to the Bank. Would have been nice except
due to Anti-war march, traffic was being diverted around central London, and
wound up going across Thames almost to Elephant-and-Castle and then back
over the Thames. This was on a Saturday morning about 9:30am, I thought
the traffic would be easy, it took 1 hour to do the 15min trip. If I
had taken the District/Circle line from Victoria would have only one set of s
tairs at the Bank UG station to the DLR platform.

How much does this cost I think 12UKP for Gatwick Express, 2UKP for
circle line to Paddington, and 15UKP for Heathrow Express.

For two people, I think I would settle for a taxi from LGW to LHR.

That's a very accurate description of what can happen if you try to take
luggage on the tube. Unless you know what the stairs are like on both sides,
I would avoid doing so. Often you can take a city bus to get to the same
point, and although it may take a little longer, it's much easier. Plus, you
get to look at London rather than a subway car.
