Here in Germany you can take the test in English or even Turkish. And there
are enough driving-instructors that offer driving lessons in one of these
languages.

So I don't really think it should be a problem in France.

Germany isn't France

No mention of it on the relevant French government site, which doesn't
surprise me.

Ok from all the replies.. i take it that there is no possiblity to take
it in english. I have also been to most of the govt websites.. no
mention of it. I was just wondering, since in Germany they offer to
take the theory test either in english or german.
Anywayz as someone mentioned.. germany and france are definitely
different.

Yeah but ... Germany and France have a common border, you could always do your
test in Germany and convert the German license to a French one

In France we speak French, all the road signs are in French. Learn the
language or stay where you are. We don't want you driving here if you
can't follow the rules of the road! comprendo??

There are far too many locals, who can't follow the rules of the road in France.
There is no room left for foreigners.

Yes and the driving test itself can be done in French or English

With regard to the USA, there are 14 states with which a reciprocity
agreement exists, the French will exchange a French permit for your
state permit. In reverse those states will accept a French permit
in exchange. At one time the French accepted any state but got
angry when certain states would not reciprocate. Obtaining a
French permit can be a costly affaire, so check out this first.

The written exam in France can be taken in any of 17 languages but
the driving test itself can only be done in English and French.

This is quite wrong. The "voie de dtresse" is frequently announced also
as "escape lane", "Notfallspur" and "via de socorro" (I'm not quite sure
about the Italian notation), and so is the addendum "use low gear".
Depending on the region, one of those languages is occasionally replaced
with Spanish.

(And beyond city names, including "toutes directions", and "Rappel" also
in France most road signs are language-independent symbols ;-)

I live in France, I have a French driver's licence. The book that one
has to read to pass the examination is "la Code de la Route" OK, there
are arrows and red stop signs, but there are a lot of rules which are
NOT posted in any language. If one wants to earn a "permis de conduire"
you have to know them. The test is not easy and it is in French.

The irony is that in France French stop signs are written in English "Stop".
In Montreal they are in two languages (see photo
http://www.fotosearch.com/ICN146/f0007613/)

with Arrt being the French word, but not used in France. So "STOP" it is.

Piggy is wrong on the language requirements on learning to drive in France.
But then he is a recent arrival.

The French Embassy in the US publishes, in English the following information
http://www.ambafrance-us.org/visitingfrance/driving.asp

DRIVING IN FRANCE

If you are on a short visit or short business trip (less than 90 days)

You may drive with a valid U.S. driver's license. In addition to that, it is
recommended (not required) to carry an International Driving Permit or
attach a French translation to your US driver's license. Also, you are to be
at least 18 years old to drive in France.

If you are a resident of France (holder of a Carte de sjour or a Carte de
rsidence, more than 90 days)

You may drive in France with a valid US (not international) driver's license
for a period of one year starting on the date of validity of the first carte
de sjour (except for students for whom driver's license expire at the end
of their studies). You must also attach a French translation of your
driver's licence.

If you have a valid driver's license prior to your first entry into France
as a resident and issued from the following states: Connecticut, Illinois,
Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Kentucky, you
may exchange it for a French permit if you apply at least three months
before the expiration of the one-year recognition period. These States offer
a reciprocal privilege of exchange for persons holding French permits.

If you don't have a driver's license from one the states mentioned above,
you must take the written and driving portions of the French licensing
examination after one year of residence in France. Special sessions are
organized for those who do not speak French. Also, you may ask to be
assisted by a translator who may be a friend or a relative.
You can take the driving exam in an automatic car, but not all driving
schools provide this service.
There is no minimum lesson hour requirement.

Requirements
To apply, go to the local Prfecture de Police, if there is not an
agreement between your State and France, the staff will direct you to a
driving school where you can take the exam.
In Paris, the Prfecture de Police is located at 7 Boulevard du Palais,
75004 Paris
Tel: 01 53 71 53 71
Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

****

At the time I obtained my French permit (1976) they would accept any
US license in exchange but according to the above information
the exchange is only good for the states of Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas,
Michigan, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Kentucky,

The above information is not specific but there are driving schools
in France which will teach the theoretical part in English.
