Anyone recommend a quick way to fly from Frankfurt, Germany to Lugano,
Switzerland? Do I have to go through Munich, or is there another way?
Thanks,

Flying to Munich makes no sense.
Zurick or Milan are the places that you should fly to,
if you really don't want to take the train the whole way.

Maybe the OP means connecting through Munich?

Lugano is much closer to Milano (1-1.5hrs) via train than Zurich (+/-3hrs),
so I would second the "fly to Milano" option.

Typically around 7h Frankfurt Hbf-Lugano with a change of train in Basel.
Air connections to Lugano are mostly with a change in Zrich and you can do
the trip in around 3h with Swiss or LH/Swiss, add on time for transport
to/from airports and time for check in/security I think rail is the best
solution.
And the trip over the St.Gotthard line is magnificent

So today I learn that Lugano has an international airport.
One can even get a flight to LCY.
And it isn't marked on my map :-(

Connections from Milan are supposedly much faster than from Zurich (Kloten).
From Zurich it takes at least 200 kilometers of driving on Alpine roads to
reach Lugano while from Milan you drive less than 100 kilometer on North
Italian plain get to the city.

Your paramaters are just most artificial and few people would use them as
that. As many replies have suggested flight from FRA most obviously would
take place to major airports around Milan (and Lugano). For instance
Malpensa is just some 60 kilometers away from Lugano. Naturally there is a
chance for "bargain flights" of several legs between FRA and Lugano but I
wouldn't count on them.

There do not appear to be any scheduled flights to Germany. See

With a change at Zrich you can find connections with a travel time of 2h 40
min .
Swiss have probably the best connections.
A small advantage is that you're allowed to buy tax-free if that's
something.

Yes, your best bet from Zurich is to avoid the motor way, and take the
alpine roads! Good thinking! ;o)
BTW, I agree Milan is the best option.

Probably not. Direct flights from FRA to Malpensa are likely bounds and
leaps cheaper than via Zurich to Lugano.

I said Swiss have the best connections assuming you want to travel directly
to Lugano. And o.p is perfectly free to make his own choice.
