Default Frankfurt Airport

Hello;

I'll be landing at the Frankfurt airport next week for the very first
time. I'm arriving
at Terminal 1 at about 7:30 am. How hard is it to find my way through
customs,
baggage and then out to the area where you can meet friends?? I'm not
used to
such large airports!

Any tips from people who travel through there a lot?

Thanks for any info.! :-)

It's big, but it's well signposted so don't worry.

It's an unusual airport ( in my opinion) because you appear to get out
into the open terminal before you collect your baggage.

You have to walk through the terminal to the other end to get to
baggage reclaim. The flights are all displayed on the monitors above
the carousels so you should be able to see yours. Leave enough time
as this can be slow.

Be aware that there are three sets of gates in Frankfurt Terminal 1
A,B and C and separate baggage claims for each. Once my flight was
diverted from an A stand to a stand in B and many of us waited a
considerable time for our baggage to show in B carousel only to
discover it had been sent to the original A stand carousel.

It wasn't a problem but an unnecessarily long wait. If this happens
or you have any concerns about any delay etc, just ask the attendant
in Baggage reclaim. They are very helpful.

Oh heck, someone who's been there a *lot* is too accustomed to give
you the newbie feel!

I was there *once*, in '97, and had no problem whatsoever.

And I was also impressed by the boarding method of the airline I was
on: unlike US lines, which board back rows to front, the boarding
instructions there also considered whether or not you had a window vs
aisle seat (aisle seats boarded after window seats). (This may be
irrelevant to your concerns about Frankfurt, but it was consistent
with everything else: well thought out, easy to use...)

It's a piece of cake. The staff speak good english, and it is well laid out,
so just follow the signs. There is an obvious area outside of customs where
your friends should wait for you.

I was meeting friends flying in from the U.S. at FRA. So I went and stood
at the baggage claim for their flight (it is clearly marked, so you can wait
at just the right baggage claim exit). The trouble was--they didn't CHECK
any baggage, and they found their way out of the concourse through another
path and wandered around looking for me for about 45 minutes. So even if
you do not check baggage--pretend as if you are and follow the signs through
baggage claim (you don't have to pick up imaginary baggage and pretend to
wheel it through customs--just walk the route).

Follow the signs - and ask for information AFTER you've looked at the
signs. Not everybody in that airport speaks English - not by a long
shot - but enough do that you shouldn't have much trouble. If you
don't speak either German or English - well, I wouldn't be happy
flying into Frankfurt if I were you - but you do - so just relax, read
the signs, follow directions - no problem
