Default France in autumn

What is the best time to travel in France in autumn? We'll be in the
Carcassonne area, then drive north into the Massif Centrale, thence toward
Chartres and Calais. I'm pondering an October visit. Will we see any fall
color?

The vineyards will have turned, and most of the forests in the mountains. So
head for the Black Mountains (say, over to Mazamet), or the Pyrenees.

Obviously, the earlier the better. October can be great, esp. in the south,
but is a lot more variable. Also the days are shorter and the nights
cooler. Be prepared for anything and you can't go wrong!
