Default First Timer to London

Flying from Aust to London via the US. What area would be good place to stay
for 2 nights only? Need inexpensive accommodation (though not hostel),
central location to do touristy things and then catch a flight home via
S'pore. Is there a website from where bookings may be done? Would prefer to
use public transport.

Hiya,

I've used hotels booked through this website before, seems to be pretty reliable and accurate:
http://www.london-hotels-guide.co.uk/

It depends what you class as "inexpensive" but you can search within a price-range.

Personally I'd stay somewhere near Victoria station (in the "City of Westminster") for easy access to all the sights (via tube, bus or foot) and good links to Heathrow (tube from Victoria) or Gatwick (train from Victoria).

Cheers
Matt

From someone who was born in London ( I don't live here now), however I am
in London for a few days .
I was walking through Victoria saturday night, I remarked to mother that
this was one area that I would hate to stay in!!
Obviously its down to personal taste...I just don't feel "safe" around
Victoria.... If I was looking to pay for accomodation I think I'd head for
Bloomsbury.

I prefer the Bloomsbury area. You can find accommodations that are
decent and moderately priced (by London standards), it's within
walking distance to the West End and other touristy areas, and you can
catch the Underground to/from Heathrow.

There are LOTS of websites from where bookings can be done. In
addition to the big operators like Travelocity or Expedia, check the
websites of the hotels themselves.

As for specific recommendations -- a Google Groups search for "london
hotel" in this group may be useful. You can ask here for experiences
with specific hotels.

Have a look at TravelStay.com for inexpensive hotels. Some good deals here.

Also, try LondonHotelSavings.com
