Rules are simple:

1) No tracksuit ever
2) No baseball caps if you are over 18
3) No tennisshoes if you are over 40
4) No jeans if you are over 60 (and never those cheap very loose fitting
jeans older americans like to wear)
4) No garish colors
5) No gigantic pairs of (sun)glasses
6) No belly bag (or how do you call those small bags you strap around your
waist)

This goes for all of europe. Additional demands can exist for specific
countries :-)

Actually, churches don't care how conservative your clothing is as
long as it covers enough skin.

THREAD MERGE

It's odd how rarely Anne Summers and related businesses (still less
finger-wetting services) make it into the guidebooks, They seem
to get plenty of tourist customers despite the curious omission of
"where can I buy a two-speed oscillating vibrator?" from the Berlitz
phrasebooks.

A lot of Italians haven't heard these rules.

My husband, who is as Italian as you get, and over 60, wears athletic
shoes, jeans and sometimes a baseball cap, which bears the logo of one
of his clients. He also has one of those bags referred to a fanny fack
in the US and as a bum bag in the UK. He doesn't wear garish colors,
but plenty of my neighbors do. I've been seeing Hawaiian shirts on
Italian men lately, and young women seem to be wearing a lot of garish
colors. I haven't noticed how big the sunglasses are this year, but I
do see track suits or something very similar.

Almost all of the "rules" about dress I see posted here seem to come from
people who inexplicably wish that everyone else dressed as they happen to
like to.

The rule is this: Wear whatever you want to. There are better things in life
to worry about. By going out of your way to dress as you imagine Europeans
might want you to, you will not fool people into thinking you are not a
tourist, or that you are a classier person than you act, or anything else.
You will just make yourself uncomfortable.
