Default Feasibility of luggage on Rome metro?

I'll be staying in a hotel not far from a Metro stop and was hoping
I'd just take the Metro from from Termini to save cab fare.

However, I recalled to mind the London Underground and remembered the
many stairs and level changes in some stations that would make
handling luggage a real pain in the neck.

So I figured I'd ask about it -- for someone with one carry-on
and one (TravelPro-like) wheeled suitcase, is the Metro feasible?
I'd certainly expect it would be, but don't want to assume anything.

Please, just don't do it. Think of how you may inconvenience other
riders. The trains are almost always crowded and people who really need
to ride the subway shouldn't be expected to accomodate you and your
freight just so you can save a few Euro. billfrogg

Personally, I wouldn't try to take more than one very small suitcase
on the metro during rush-hour. On the A line, in particular,
passengers are packed like sardines. If you're travelling mid-morning
or mid-afternoon, though, you should be fine.

You are supposed to buy a ticket for your suitcase if one or more of
the following dimensions is exceeded: length 50 cm, width 30 cm, depth
25 cm. Bags exceeding 80x45x25 may not be taken on the metro (again,
according to the official regulations).

Thanks for the information! Well, my plane lands at FCO at 10:40
(24hr time), so I'd imagine that by the time I clear customs, get my
bags, and take the train from FCO to Termini, it would be somewhere
between noon and 13:00 by the time I'd be looking to take the Metro.
I notice that time is neither mid-morning nor mid-afternoon. Is
noon-13:00 also a time when it's too busy for this?

I shall measure my bags and see if they are compliant. Thanks
again!

One thing you should consider is *not* taking the "express" to Termini. I
just costs more and takes longer making that long awkward loop back in from
the east. Rather, take the train to Ostiense station and catch the Metro
there. If your hotel on the S. side of town and you take a cab it may cost
less, or at least no more, from Ostiense. About the Rome Metro; I have been
so packed in at rush hour, that I could not physically get to the exit for
my station, even though I started trying three stops early. I had to go two
stops beyond, get off and cross over to the inbound train to go back two
stops to the station I wanted. This with no luggage. Clearly, at some times,
traveling with luggage on the Metro is a *bad idea.*

OBTW, the Rome transit company has a nice windows application that will give
you the best routing between any two addresses in Rome. You might want to
download it.

If you are staying on the north side, up near Lepanto, there is a Cotral bus
you can take in from Fiumicino.

You will be OK provided you are on the metro before 13.00. But there
may be better ways to get to your hotel - where are you staying?
