Just to let you all know the outcome of this.
Decided we had nothing to loose by trying so went to airport Saturday am. At
the check in desk operator checked with supervisor and returned to tell us
that expired passport of up to ONE year is still valid id for airline
check in and entry to Spain (probably therefore applies to any other EU
country). After Friday evening checking with passport office 24 hour help
line and tour operators and being told we had no chance of travelling
everything turned out alright on the day. Just a pity passport helpdesk and
travel agents did not pass on correct information, it would have saved us
alot of heartache!!
