Okay came back and finally got all the receipts to compare
exchange rates.
1) Amex cash exchange state side (wife insisted on some
cash before we left) 3 days prior to departure
$350 at 1.27 $/euro + $5 fee
2) Amex Green card (4 days after arrival)
1.20 $/ euro no other fees
3) Visa/Citi group (ATT Universal 2 days after arrival)
1.19 $/euro +3% fee
4) Credit Union ATM card (day of arrival)
1.18 $/euro +$1 fee on $200 withdrawl
So strangely I got the best credit card deal with Amex.
The over all clue would have been to work in cash as
much as possible. The second clue might be to get a
better Visa card. I get this one without an annual
fee "for life" and it has a calling card feature.
But this is starting to bug me a bit. 3rd clue is
to get the wife to get a clue. I checked the rates
and they didn't fluctuate much. They were 1.19
for several days while we were there. Later in
the month they headed towards 1.21. But this is
virtually the same result I got last year. I musta
hit exactly the right time with the ATM card. I should
check the transaction dates on the bill and see if
there is any variation based upon that. But I still
ain't crazy about that Visa fee.

I think you're lying; you give the general impression that you are
never glad about anything, or for anybody.
For those who have grunge killfiled, and not me: sorry for inflicting
him on you, but I felt an overwhelming urge to be sour. I don't know
what brought it on.

Oh- c'mon Padraig, don't ya know the song Billie Holiday (among others)
used to sing?
GLAD TO BE UNHAPPY
Look at yourself.
If you had the sense of humor,
You would laught to beat the band.
Look at yourself.
Do you still belive in rumor
that romance is simply grand?
Since you took it right
on the chin,
you have lost that bright
toothpaste grin.
My mental state is all a jumble.
I sit around and sadly mumble.
Fools rush in, so here I am,
very glad to be unhappy.
Unrequited love's a bore,
and I've got it pretty bad.
But for someone you adore,
it's a pleasure to be sad
Like a straying baby lamb
with no mammy and no pappy,
I'm so unhappy,
but oh, so glad.
