Default Everyday life in Krakow

I'm planning a month long stay in Krakow next year. I noticed it got in the
top 10 cities in Europe for lots of postings on this site. I'm interested to
hear about any social problems in the city and Poland generally as the
migrants from Poland have a certain reputation in the UK and Europe at the
moment. Is this a gross and unjustified generalisation? Won't stop me going...
but doesn't hurt to be prepared, especially as I'll be travelling solo.

I was only there less than a week, so I can't comment on
crime except to say I wasn't mugged - but I wasn't mugged
anywhere else either:-) I never felt threatened anywhere in
Poland. Except Auschwitz; just being there felt ominous.
Make sure you visit while you're there.

One point - if you intend driving a car while there, they
are nearly as insane on the roads as Neapolitans. Take care,
and drive as a paranoid - assume that they are all out to
get you and the few that aren't are drunk or incompetent.

Cheers, Alan, Australia

Nothing wrong with the Polish except they drink a lot. Animosity
always comes along when a large number of immigrants move in.

Well, out of a population here in Bristol of around half a million,
there are estimates that 15,000 Poles have settled here. Most of them
that I encounter seem to be young and work as bus drivers and in pubs,
bars, restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores.

In my experience they're generally cheerful, courteous, and give me a
big smile whenever I try out my limited Polish on them.

So - what's their "certain reputation", pray?

Actually, what you described _is_ the reputation, as far as I can tell.

Here they have a certain reputation for being able to do plumbing,
carpentry, tiling and electrical jobs very well and charge around EUR
14/ hour instead EUR 40/hour.
