Excellent suggestion! Let's base it in Germany, where our government is
about to raise taxes for tobacco. Boy, that should balance out our federal
budget in no time!

Err... why? Aren't Spain and Denmark both in Europe?

In the days when BA still had smoking on flights, I was once stuck in
smoking on a transatlantic journey because nothing else was available.
There were a few spare seats next to me, which two people kept on
leaving their non-smoking seats further down the plane to come and "have
a smoke" in. Of course, they didn't want to sit in smoking- no, no, that
would be too uncomfortable. Bastards.

FWIW, a few months later, I was told I could only get a smoking seat on
a similar BA flight, and I refused- saying they could route me any way
they wanted, but I'd refuse to sit in smoking again. As it turned out
they upgraded me to business, and I was happy.

For a list of scheduled airlines that still permit smoking, see:

http://hem.passagen.se/fungus/airlines.html

JU (Yugoslav) is one within Europe that still permits smoking.

I´ve had the same experience on trains, when I´ve been seated in a
smoking section on longer journeys . If you happen to have a vacant
seat next to you , you risc having a continous stream of people from
non smoking who "just want to sit for a moment for a smoke." And often
they will leave some trash behind as well, like an empty bottle,
coffee cups,newspaper etc.
By the way , on the above flight they expressly forbid people to
sneak from non smoking to smoking section.

We have purists in the NG who maintain that the Canaries are not
part of Europe and therefore OT. In some ways the Canaries resemble
South America more than mainland Spain, however they are definitely
in no way African, neither culturally nor historically.

I'm pretty sure Europe ends at the Urals in that direction, political
"Europe" (as in including the Canaries) ends much further west at the
moment. But I realise my statement didnt really have the impact I
hoped as I was forgetting its geographically in while I was hoping to
get the "Russia joins EU, shock" reaction, if you see what I mean?
Probably not, i'm in a hole, shall I stop digging? :-)

I think they do resemble south america a bit, certainly in the way
they are Spanish speaking but not in Europe! :-)
I'd be the last to worry about being purist about what gets discussed,
its just that dustance (flying down to Africa for 4 hours+) is
relevant to smoking rules. If people want to discuss Cuerta or
Melillla, the two Spanish colonies in mainland Africa, I certainly
wont start an argument, although Hong Kong, when it was British would
have started to get a bit silly!

No, why on earth should I? I bought a ticket on an airline that permits smoking, so it's no
business of mine to complain. Doesn't bother me in the slightest anyway.
