Default ENG - FRA - Ferry or Eurotunnel ?

Hi all,

Planning a trip to the Nurburgring the week after the late august bank
holiday.
Whats the cheapest way of getting over to France - Dover - Calais.
I don't want to spend to long on a boat.
Plan to depart Sunday 29th August - AM
and return Friday 3rd September - PM
Any hints on saving money on ET or Ferries would be appreciated.

I'm really suprised no-one's come up with sensible answers.

So, as no one else has rumaged through their list for
the information....

Apparently this is the cheapest.

http://www.speedferries.com/index.html

I've never used it and know nothing about it
beyond what is on the web site.

I always travel by tunnel, but then the 3/5 day returns are
much more reasonably priced from this side of the river
(though the full price fares are still extortionate)

Having said that, ET do have a special fare of 100 quid return
if you can rearrange your trip so that you leave in the evening
and return in the morning:

Boat is cheaper, Eurotunnel is quick and convenient, the tradeoff
is your choice

Buy a 'fixed' time departure on Eurotunnel, they always offer
you the next shuttle anyway.

1) Not on busy days they don't. Miss your slot and a five hour
wait for the next available space is not uncommon.

2) Unless you pay more for the open ticket they will charge you
the upgrade fee, which is usually more than difference.
The OP wanted to go as cheap as possible.

I dont recommend being late

I used it twice in the last month, on both occasions
they put me on an earlier shuttle, there was no charge.

They put you on the one before (up to half an hour)
for free.

Sometimes this saves as much as 12 minutes.
On other occasions I've been told the one before is
full and I have to wait for my slot.

They don't seem to advertise these rules anywhere
so it's impossible to check that your getting what you
are entitled to

I was 3 hours early on the return trip

Might be cheaper to look for a direct flight. You can get returns on
Eurostar to Brussels for around £60, depending on precisely when you
travel and if you're prepared to tie yourself down, but then youv'e
got to get your onward travel to Germany. The ferry part won't take
long, but isn't really set up for individual foot travellers
connecting to trains on either side any more, and the total travel
time + cost won't be particularly advantageous.

Then you had a full price ticket.

See the price list I posted a link to. It details the extra
fees for change of travel time. The same fee is payable if you
ring up and change before you leave, or if you arrive early or
late for your booked time.

It is cheap - and actually quite quick (though travellers prone to
mal-de-mer might find it a little unsettling). I have used it already this
summer.

Speedferries simply sell you a crossing each way = no restriction to 5 days,
etc (AFAICS).

Not at all. It's quite true.
