No caviar export from Iran in 5 months
Nov 9, 2005

Iran did not export caviar during March-August, reported Fars news agency,
stressing that export of the product stood at $9 mln and 100 thousand in the
corresponding period last year. The agency did not say why export of the
expensive delicacy had discontinued.

Caviar exports accounted for 0.4 % of the total non-oil exports during March
to August 2004.

This is while shrimp exports also dropped by 47 % in the same period this
year to reach $1.7 mln. Some $3.2 mln worth of shrimps were exported in the
corresponding period last year, when shrimp exports constituted 0.14 % of
the total non-oil exports. The figure currently stands at 0.06 %.

Fisheries experts have also predicted that sturgeon exports will drop by
20-25 % until March 2006.

The Caspian Sea is facing a crisis of reduced seafood reserves.

Iran has called on Caspian littoral states to prevent unauthorized catch of
sturgeon.

Iranian experts say these countries have to give top priority to recovery
projects and release of sturgeon fingerlings, warning that Caspian reserves
are depleting rapidly.

Irans sturgeon catch has dropped drastically in recent years due to
environmental reasons.

Iran is playing a crucial role in preserving aquatic resources of the
Caspian and is determined to crack down on illegal caviar trade.

Iran is authorized to export 59.9 tons of caviar a year. Turkmenistan with
three tons holds the lowest caviar export quota among Caspian Sea littoral
sates.

Russia, the largest exporter after Iran, is authorized to export 20.7 tons
of caviar, Kazakhstan 14 tons and Azerbaijan six tons.

I read this somewhere:

============
Iran's shrimp production to hit 10,000 tons

Tehran Times Economic Desk
TEHRAN - Development of the shrimp farming industry in the four southern
Iranian provinces would be capable of creating some 500,000 direct and
indirect job opportunities in the region.

No economic sector including the oil industry, is as economical as the
shrimp farming planned to be developed in the four southern provinces
because, thanks to their superior quality, Iran's shrimps are easily and
directly offered at the U.S. markets without tariffs or in some cases with
very little tariffs, the Persian service of Iranian Students News Agency
ISNA quoted Arsalan Qasemi, an expert in the field as saying on Friday.

After joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) many of our industries
would be seriously damaged. However, our agriculture sector in particular
the fisheries, not only would not be harmed by accession to the organization
rather, many of the problems currently facing the industry would be solved.
It would be benefited by the measure, noted the official.

Iran has about 2,700 hectares of coastline most of which enjoy water
resources available to them. Incidentally, the seashores are located at the
parts of the nation that are considered as the world's dry regions. This
provides a very suitable condition for shrimp farming, he noted adding, the
issue, however, calls for the cooperation by both the public and private
sectors.

He put this year's (Iranian year ends March 20) shrimp production at 2,400
tons and presumed that the next year's harvest from the four provinces is
expected to hit 10,000 tons.
