LONDON (Reuters) - Millions of households face higher energy bills from
next month after EDF Energy said on Monday it will raise gas prices by
nearly a fifth because of surging wholesale costs.

EDF Energy's increase is the latest in a string of steep rises in the
last two years as utilities pass through a surge in wholesale gas
prices, triggered by sliding output from Britain's mature North Sea
fields and greater reliance on imported fuel.

Official data last week showed record higher utility bills pushed the
inflation rate to a nine-month high in June.

EDF Energy, formerly London Electricity before being bought by French
power firm EDF, and one of the country's biggest suppliers, has around
five million customers mostly in London and southeast England.

The company will raise gas bills by an average 19 percent as of July
31, with electricity bills rising eight percent.

"We have been absorbing some of the costs of increased wholesale prices
in the hope they would ease," Derek Lickorish, chief operating officer
of EDF Energy customers branch, said in a statement.

"Reluctantly we now have to pass on a proportion of the resulting costs
to customers," he said.

The company said wholesale costs had jumped 80 percent in the last
year.
