Eastern Ukraine Threatens to Secede if Yushchenko Wins
I just heard in the news that the Crimean parliament proclaimed the
right to defend its own way, including secession from Ukraine and incorporation into the Russian Federation. Eastern regions which threaten to secede from Kiev account for 80% of the Ukrainian national wealth. Without the industrial east, Ukraines incomes will fall from 1/3 of Russia to 1/10th of Russia. The prospects of joining the EU will have to be postponed... -------------------------------------------------------- Deputies from Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine, where the disputed winner of the country's presidential poll Viktor Yanukovych gained much of his votes, have threatened to call a referendum on the formation of an autonomous republic if opposition protestors favoring pro-Western Viktor Yushchenko get their way. Donetsk deputies pledged to form an "East-South" autonomous republic, along with the Crimea region, which already enjoys more powers than Ukraine's 26 other regions, Reuters reported. Hundreds of thousands of protesters are still in the streets across central and western Ukraine denouncing the official count which shows Yanukovich as the winner of last Sunday's presidential election. "If they don't clear people out of Kiev squares on Saturday and Sunday, we should, in an orderly, constitutional way, stage a referendum of trust to determine this country's make-up," Donetsk Mayor Alexander Lukyanchenko told the assembly. "We can live without that half (of the country), but can they live without us?" the mayor in this primarily industrial region was quoted by Reuters as saying. The east, which generates much of Ukraine's wealth with its coal, chemical and steel industries, has rejected opposition calls for a nationwide strike. Crimea, which already has its own parliament and government, is also Russian-speaking and for a time in the 1990s protested against rule by Ukrainian authorities. The disputed election has highlighted Ukraine's centuries-old divide between the Russian-speaking east and the Ukrainian-speaking west. Ukraine's constitution only allows for nation-wide referendums. To stage a referendum three million signatures are needed in two-thirds of the country of 47 million. Each region has to provide at least 100,000 signatures. http://www.mosnews.com/news/2004/11/...tukraine.shtml [email protected] (Seriozha) wrote in message news:<[email protected]. com>... > yp <[email protected]> wrote in message news:<[email protected]>. .. > > By reading many reports on the Ukrainian elections, and looking at the > > many maps of Ukraine showing the division in the population and the > > vote, it is clear that Ukraine is as divided today as Czechoslovakia > > was at the time when it separated between the Czech Republic and > > Slovakia. > > > > It would seem to me therefore that the best solution would be to split > > Ukraine into east and west more or less along the Dnipro river. I think the Dec 12 election, at this time, would still require Yanukovych to renounce his win. Re: Eastern Ukraine Threatens to Secede if Yushchenko Wins
The Crimean parliament is controlled by hardcore pro-Russia, pro-USSR
types who have been unable to resolved the internal tensions and conflicts within Crimea. They are at odds with the Tartar people who since 1991 have finally been allowed to return to their "home" after having been forcible deported during the time of the Soviet regime. The pro-Russian population has been feeling increasingly edgy about the "new" immigrants which boil down to real fear about the loss of political power in the area. Also please note that secession is a CRIMINAL ACT under the Ukrainian constitution. Members of Crimea's parliament have tried to secede before. The situation in Crimea (majority are ethnic Russians) had even been tried to justify an attempt to prevent Ukraine from having independence back in 1991. Yuschenko and his political party are pushing for FREE AND HONEST ELECTIONS! - If re-elections are actually held it is predicted that Yuschenko would receive 75% to Yanukovych 25%. Any extreme percentage would actually destroy the LEGITIMACY of the winner both inside Ukraine and abroad. The separatist are also afraid that Yuschenko would win in a free and honest election (which is why they and Kuchma's govt did not allow that to happen - BY THE WAY BOTH rounds of elections did not meet foreign observer's standards.) for the simple reason that he has promised to end criminal corruption. PLEASE VISIT HTTP://WWW.YUSCHENKO.COM.UA/ENG/pres..._Ukraine_bloc/ for information both (personal and political) about Yuschenko as well as a breakdown of the political parties which support him. Millions of dollars has been stolen from the Ukrainian people by Kuchma, corrupt government officials and business leaders. These people KNOW that in a free and honest election Yuschenko would win, they would be facing criminal prosecutions, and so they are willing to split the country in even though this is NOT THE WILL OF THE MAJORITY OF THE UKRAINIAN people both from the West and East. Members of Crimea's And proclaiming oneself president before a handful of one's supporters in the Rada is not a criminal act? And blocking the work of the cabinet of ministers and the president's administration is not a criminal act? There is an international principle that every minority has the right to choose their form of political organisation. Asking for autonomy may be a criminal act according to perverted national law but it will always be justified by international law which normally has precedence over the national regulation. By the way, the Russian media reports that not only Crimea but 12 other regions, including Trans-Carpathia, called for independence of their respective regions. Splitting the country will leave Yuschenko the president of Galicia. Unlike united Ukraine, Galicia will be able to join EU and NATO as soon as possible: it has no viable industry and no Russian forces located on its territory. On the other hand, united Ukraine will not be able to join NATO until 2050 when the treaty about Russian Black Sea Fleet being quartered in Sevastopol will expire. > parliament have tried to secede before. These They were stolen primarily by his corrupt prime-ministers Lazarenko and Yuschenko. I wonder how it happens that Lazarenko has been imprisoned for several years but the Gas Lady who signed all the documents with him is still free and shouting on the streets of Kiev. You may follow a link to the Guardian home page to learn how M-me Timoshenko (her actual name is Telegina, she has not a drop of Ukrainian blood) earned her billions by stealing Russian gas and selling it to Europe. > people KNOW that in a free and honest election Yuschenko would win, > they would be facing criminal prosecutions, and so they are willing to > split the country in even though this is NOT THE WILL OF THE MAJORITY > OF THE UKRAINIAN people both from the West and East. |

The NATO and some non-NATO exit polls also showed that Yuschenko won over %50 of the first round of voting. If we had free and fair elections we wouldn't need to be going through this mess because Yuschenko would have won the first round. |

There is nothing wrong with voting against the "beloved candidate". The problem is when they seek to impose their own candidate on the rest of the country despuite him not winning the majority of votes according to any legitmate standard. Do you, kirill, honestly believe that Yanukovich received more real votes than Yushchenko? Do you think that whatever abuses some on Yushchenko's team were committing were even comparable to the abuses committed by Yanukovich's side (96% rate of voting, over 90% for Yanukovich in his oblast)? Settle down Kirill - you're on the verge of a stroke. I understand how upset you must be with your Moscow puppet (Yanukowych) now so completely discredited with the evidence Yushchenko just presented to the Supreme Court. Do note how Yanukovych has refused to take part in a second "fair" election - because he knows that the only way he can win is if he is allowed to cheat freely. And he well knows that any election from here on will be scrutinized and kept clean. Yanukowych has evacuated his family from Kyiv and his campaign manager just quit. Time for you and all you Moskovites to face the truth: Ukrainians have stood up off their knees and will not take any more instructions from the KGB man in the Kremlin. And speaking of Putin, the satisfaction each and every Ukrainian feels knowing that it is WE, the people that you and your bretherin have raped for centuries, that are the ones who are responsible for the greatest public humiliation of a Russian president since the drunkard Yeltsin lay passed out on the tarmac of a Dublin airport is absolutely priceless.
