Default Durham Tess Valley - RyanAir destination

Hello from Rome, Italy,
we've just bought a RyanAir ticket for a weekend, the flight will land in
Durham Tess Valley (MME).

Someone can say me what we'll find there? :-) Where is good to go for 2
days?

We are searching a city with some amazing nightlife, beer, pubs,
dancing-kidding-joking and so on. We are few goodfellas and we want to spend
2 days in happiness and fun.

It's better to go in Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Hartlepool,
Middlesbrough, Redcar o Cleveland?
Any raccomandation is accepted!!

Thanks

ciao
dear

Nightlife? Definitely Newcastle.

Durham can occupy a pleasant afternoon of history-oriented sightseeing.

BTW - is MME what used to be called Teesside Airport, or is there another one?

As a Middlesbrough man it pains me to say it
but Newcastle is the place to go.

Tess used to be called Tees.

Teesside International Airport

Durham and the Tees Valley is in the North East of England and is an
area of exciting contrasts. Whether you seek a country ramble over
expansive moorland, sandy beaches and towering cliffs, shopping and
fine dining or to discover the heritage of smugglers haunts and famous
explorers. The Tees Valley area is so compact that you can really do
all these things in a day or two.

The Tees Valley is at the heart of Captain Cook Country, on the
doorstep of the North York Moors National Park, as well as a 'stone's
throw' (30 miles) from Whitby, York, Durham and Newcastle.

The Tees Valley is an area encompassing the five historic boroughs of
Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton
on Tees. The quality of life is superb, it's prosperous, with
excellent infrastructure and every imaginable leisure and
entertainment facility. The roads are uncongested and access is
excellent.

We are proud of our heritage; Captain James Cook was born in
Middlesbrough in 1728, Thomas Sheraton the famous furniture designer
was born in Stockton in 1751, the first Stockton and Darlington
passenger railway opened in 1825 and Middlesbrough was world famous
for its iron production during the nineteenth century.

There is something for everyone in the Tees Valley, a wealth of
attractions such as Hartlepool Historic Quay and the Captain Cook
Birthplace Museum.

Excellent sporting facilities such as Middlesbrough Football Club
Riverside Stadium and White Water Rafting at the Tees Barrage not to
mention sailing, surfing, golf and horseriding. The shopping is
fantastic from the new chic designer department store Psyche in
Middlesbrough to farmers markets or antique and curio shops.

Add to that great restaurants, amazing nightlife and a fantastic range
of accommodation from luxurious country house hotels with spa
facilities to friendly B & B's. You really will have a break to
remember.

County Durham is the Land of the Prince Bishops

For centuries the powerful Bishops of Durham ruled the County Palatine
as a virtually independent state. They had their own army, nobility,
courts and coinage, and they left behind a fascinating legacy which
can still be traced today.

Few counties have such variety of landscape as Durham. From the North
Pennines in the west to the North Sea Coast in the east, there are
pleasures to suit all tastes. At its heart lies Durham City, small
enough to enjoy on foot yet so exceptional that its castle and
cathedral are designated a World Heritage Site.

Durham is a compact city yet offers a wide range of facilities. A wide
range of shops and restaurants co-exist happily with the Victorian
Market. Much of Durham’s shopping area is closed to traffic, making
for a more relaxed atmosphere. Take time to sit in the cobbled Market
Place and enjoy some of the street entertainment, particularly during
July and August. The monthly Farmers’ Market is a welcome new addition
to the events calendar. Here you will find fresh local specialties to
take back home. In the Spring and Summer, stunning floral displays
adorn the City for which Durham regularly wins prizes.

Yet within minutes, it is possible to escape the bustle of this
thriving market town by taking one of the many paths that lead down to
the riverbanks. Watch the river for rowers from one of the university
teams, or take the ‘Prince Bishop’ river cruiser for a gentle trip
along the river with stunning views.

The Racecourse backs on to the River Wear and is a favourite area for
walks. Horse races have not been held here since the 19th century,
however the country’s top athletics cross-country event is now a
regular fixture here and attracts the best runners in the world.

For over a century the Miners’ Gala has taken place here on the second
Saturday in July. Despite the closure of all pits in County Durham,
ex-miners, their families and friends still gather to hear speeches,
socialise and attend a special service in the Cathedral. Colliery
bands lead processions and banners are proudly paraded through the
streets.

The stretch of river by the Racecourse is well known for the annual
Durham Regatta which is held in June. The regatta was founded in its
present form in 1834, making it the second oldest in the country, even
older than Henley. The Regatta has grown enormously in recent years,
attracting over 600 crews from all over the world.

No need to feel bad - I'm sure that there will be posters looking for a
good place to buy or sell tamazapan, or alternatively get their head
kicked in and their corpse thrown into a torrent of industrial waste,
and at that time you can unreservedly recommend the 'Boro.

Copied from the airport website since the OP didn't seem to be able to

Of course if he doesn't go to Middlesbrough he'll miss seeing the
original site of the Transporter Bridge recently moved to Grand Canyon

This was one of the first airports in the UK to have a rail connection
(I think they just renamed a suitably located ststion).

The problem is that there are so few flights to the airport
that nobody arrives by train and the service was continually
reduced until it is now sees one train a week in each
direction (there is an hourly train that runs non-stop through
the station.

Perhaps the introduction of the Ryanair service will result
in the train being useful again.

Duh! I thought I saw it last time I passed around Middlesbrough. :-)
