I'll be driving from Switzerland to Paris over the course of about July 4-8,
with children 12 and 14. Any suggestions for things to see, places to stay
en route? Do I need to book accommodations ahead of time, or can I ad lib
it?

Lew,
You can always find good motels in that part of France. Just pull in by
18:00, clean up, and then find a place for dinner. You can't go wrong.
I drove my 11 year old daughter up to Paris from Milan through the Mont
Blanc tunnel. We stopped to buy some wine in Beaune but other than that
just went on to Paris. If you take the primary roads and not the
autoroutes (with tolls) you'll often see fairs set up on the outskirts
of cities with rides and entertainment. If you want something more
serious I suggest the Michelin Green Guide to Burgundy. It has several 3
and 4 day tour programs. You'll probably be passing near Dijon in
Burgundy whichever city in Switzerland you start from.
