I will be driving back from Malaga in a few weeks and, prior to buying a
guidebook, I thought I'd ask for suggestions from people regarding the
route.
We plan to do the trip in 5 days and probably avoid cities. Can anybody
suggest a nice scenic route with some decent places to stop off in during
the trip.
We havn't decided what ferry route to take yet, so we dont have any fixed
places to goto.
Thanks

I hope you like driving! You are talking of a distance of about 1600
miles or 2500 km.

There is, I think, a ferry connection from Santander to a south of
England port (is it Portsmouth?).

There is a ferry from Bilbao to Portsmouth or Santander to Plymouth.
I am doing the trip myslef in a few weeks on my bike.
I am taking the ferry to Bilbao and driving down to Guaro, just north of
Malaga.
My return route will take me up to Leida, through to Andorra (got to buy
some motorcycle gear). From here I am goinf round the eastern part of
Western Europe.
When I have done the trip previously after Andorra I have gone up to
Clermont Ferrand, Orleans and onto Le Havre. Road between Beziers and
Clermont Ferrand can be a little boring but very spectaculor.
There is a new bridge opened at Millau, some claim this can be seen from
Space. I saw it in the construction stage, it is huge!
Hope this helps, anything elselet me know.

Hi
The A75 is a spectacular road, which I use often (will be taking it later today).
Sad to report that the new bridge in Millau will open in 2005. There were 23km queues to drive through the town this weekend.
The quickest short ferry route is probably Malaga - Barcelona - Montpellier - Lyon - Dijon - Calais.

Assuming you mean no massive cities? I would go "left" of Madrid.
Sort of through the Gredos.
Granada over the mountains, Almagro, Toledo, Salamanca. Then a
ferry from the north coast to UK? One day for the boat, one day
for england leaves three days. Doable if you like driving.

My impression has always been that the nice scenic route takes forever and
can be tiring. From Malaga I would head NORTH to Madrid. Look at
www.viamichelin.com for DRIVING DIRECTIONS. If you have not visited some of
the nicer places in Spain, then this could be a good opportunity ! I would
look at the Paradores web site and plan a visit to one or two on the way to
the French border at or near San Sebastian.
http://www.parador.es/english/index.jsp You could consider the Parador at
Chinchon which is south of Madrid and probably one of the nicest places to
visit ! You can then motor up towards France and consider one of the other
paradors in this area such as PARADOR DE HONDARRIBIA which is close to Irun
on the border, in Basque country. In France depending on the season, just
peel off the motorway at convenient stops. Maybe a peel off before Tours
going north west to Chinon and Saumur then north again. Definitely worth a
5 day relaxed journey but stick to the main roads as much as possible.
That's my advice
