Looking at a map, the distance between Dresden-Berlin and Dresden-
Wroclaw looks to be about the same. Since the train from Dresden to
Berlin only takes two hours or so, I thought that the train from Dresden
to Wroclaw would take only a little longer. Using DB's website, I
found trains requiring about five hours. Why so long? Does the train
stop at the border, or is the Polish portion of the trip much slower than
the portion in Germany? I used Wroclaw Glowny for their train station.

Polish trains are old and slow - a trip from Gdansk to Warsaw takes 4 to 5
hours. I don't know if you need to change trains, but I'm sure the German
ICE trains do not go into Poland.

1) Dresden-Wroclaw is about 40% further than Dresden-Berlin, as the
crow flies.
2) The railway line between Dresden and Wroclaw is less straight, so
difference in travel distance is even larger.
3) The terrain between Dresden and Wroclaw is slightly more hilly.
4) The Dresden-Wroclaw train makes about 10 stops at intermediate
stations, while the Dresden-Berlin only makes one intermediate stop.
