Default Dolomites from Venice in One Day?

We're spending a week in Venice soon, and would like to briefly visit
the Dolomites. There are commercial one day tours, but it has also
been suggested that we just rent a car and go. We really don't want
to switch hotels, so are hoping to do it as a day trip.

Does a one day visit make sense? Tour or rental car?

Thanks,

I stayed in Treviso two years ago with my car and I did the Dolomites
comfortly in one day.

We whent from treviso, just 20 - 30 miles north of Venice, up to Pieve do
Cadore then across to Cortina d;Ampezzo then through the Dolomites to
Bolzano where we had plenty of time to stop off for a meal and to see the
stone age ice man in the National Museum. This is well worth a visit. It was
a splendid day out as the views are stupendous. We went strait down the A22
to join the A4 near Verona then back to Treviso.

It is not a difficult drive and having your own transport is a great
advantage.

Hope this helps.

If you've never been there a one day trip makes sense. For example:
Head north via Feltre into the mountains direction Sella mountain,
left side up before it, maybe take the cable car up to Sella, the down
Val Gardena and back on the highway. You have no time for hiking
trips, of course, but it's a comfortable day trip, not a race and you
see many of the famous mountains.

Tour or car is up to you. Both has advantages. With a car you are free
in your plans, but the driver won't see much.
