Default DB online price vs walkup price

I can buy a return trip second class ticket for the ICE Augsburg-
Bamberg for 54 euros, DB's online savings fare. The normal online
fare is 72 euros. What would the fare be if I bought it from a DB
ticket clerk in Augsburg: 72 euros? Is there any discount when I
buy a return trip ticket from a DB clerk?

Also, if I buy it this way, I receive a reservation (I think). What will
happen if I take an earlier/later train? Will my ticket still be valid for
the same ICE route, just that I will have no reservation?

54 or 72 Euro

You have to buy the reduced return tickets at least 3 days in advance. No
difference if you do this online or at the counter.

    > Also, if I buy it this way, I receive a reservation (I think).
Seat reservation is free if the ticket is bought online or from a ticket
machine.
If bought at the counter it is EUR 3,-.
The saving price tickets are valid only for the booked trains, but if you
want seat reservation you have to pay the EUR 3,- if buying at the counter.

    > What will
    > happen if I take an earlier/later train?
Normal ticket: no problem - just that your seat reservation is no useless
Saving price tickets: you have to change the ticket if you want to use
another connections. Makes no sense here. The fee is nearly as high as the
savings compared to a normal (and flexible) return ticket.

If you want to save money buy a Bavaria Ticket Single for this journey: EUR
15,-
Valid for one day till 3am next day on all local trains in Bavaria. On
weekdays however only past 9am.
Covers furthermore all local public transport in Augsburg (but not in
Bamberg).

Thank you for answering. So, if a passenger is unsure of the return
time, a saving price ticket may not be so useful

But I thought ICE trains were not covered by the BayernTicket. DB
only shows ICE trains Augsburg-Bamberg.

Is this because Bamberg is not in Bavaria?

By default the DB timetable shows always the fastest connection.
Select at "Means of transport:" "only local transport" instead of "standard
search" and you will see the RE trains on this route.

No. It it is in Bavaria.
Bavaria Ticket covers in first place only local trains of DB: RB, RE, IRE,
S-Bahn
Other means of transport (private railways, regional bus companies, local
transport authorities, ...) are only included if there is a special
agreement.
This is the case for the AVV (Augsburger Verkehrs- and Tarifverbund - a
local transport authority), but not for the STVP which operates the buses in
Bamberg.
A complete list what is covered with the Bavaria Ticket can be found at:

I must remember to read the instructions before using, thanks for
your help.

Can I change my ticket on the train with the conductor or must I change
it with a DB ticket clerk?

No, it's just because Bamberg doesn't take part in the Bayernticket offer,
like some other small Bavarian towns.

However, Bamberg public transport is rather inexpensive (EUR 1 for a single
trip or EUR 3 for 4 trips; there is also a 48-hour pass for EUR 6).

You can pay the surcharge (EUR 15 plus the difference between saver and
full-fare) on the train.

You don't have to pay if you miss a connection due to a delayed or cancelled
train; in this case your ticket is valid on the next available train without
any surcharge.

Thanks for that information. Since I plan to stay in Bamberg for 2
days, the 48-hour pass seems perfect. A few more questions, please:
- Do you know the name/number of the bus that travels from the
train station to the town center (I will stay at the IBIS Hotel)
- I assume that the 48-hour pass is sold at the train station?
- What is the German phrase for 48-hour pass?

When you leave the station, go to the bus stop just across the road
(a bit to the right). All buses stopping there (that is, lines 1, 2,
7, 11, 14, 17) go to the "Promenade" transit center. From there it's
only a short walk to the hotel - see
http://www.ibishotel.com/ibis/ficheh...ituation.shtml
(the transit center is about where the word "Promenade" shows up on
the little map).

See http://www.verkehrsbetriebe.de/lin/plan1.pdf for a bus map.

I think you can buy it from the ticket machine at the bus stop. I don't
know if the bus drivers also sell them.

    > - What is the German phrase for 48-hour pass?

In Bamberg, it's called "Touristenkarte" (tourist pass).

You're most welcome. One thing I forgot: you probably have to validate
your tourist pass in the validator on the first bus you board (to mark
the beginning of the 48-hour period).

There is a transit information office at Promenade transit center
where you can get schedules, maps and the like. However, you'll probably
walk most of the time anyway - Bamberg is not a big place.

Enjoy Bamberg! I rather like that town.
