For Naples itself (not a lot there), strongly suggest you stay with an
organised group.
If you have the time, a trip up Vesuvius (and, of course, Pompeii,
Herculaneum).
Or, if it's offered, a day trip along the coast to Amalfi would be
unforgettable.
And it is possible to do a day trip to Rome from there.

Re: Day trip to Naples
first of all
buy a card that enables you to travel free of charge or with huge discounts
on public transport.
then it enables you to visit monuments and museums free of charge or with
huge rebates.
there is a special red bus called M ( monuments )
reserved to the holders of this card
it will take you to different monuments free of charge.
you will not be able to visit more than 3 or 4 museums in one day. so..
just study before which are the best ones.
most of the foundings of Pompei are in the archeological museum.
Pompei is a must.. but so is the King's Palace in Caserta

A day, one day, in Naples? All I can suggest is to get on an organized
tour. The National Antiquities Museum, Royal Palace, Sapnish Quarter,
there's so much to do. The underground alone is a day of its own.
Naples is an amazing and unique place.

Either visit Pompeii south of Naples, or more practically visit the
huge and impressive archeological museum. watch out for pickpockets.

That last is important. As a one-day visitor who is perceived to be very
rich you'll be the focus of attention for pickpockets. Of whom there are
a few in Naples. (and pretty much every other city in the world).
