Day trip from Athens
Early in June my wife and I will be in Athens, Greece for 3 days before heading off
to Santorini. Most of the people we talk to say that 2 days in Athens is plenty (just
see the Acropolis, museum, flea market).
Can anyone recommend a day trip from Athens?
Thanks in advance.

If you go to Piraeus (a 20 minute trip on the metro) you will find regular hydrofoils
to some of the nearer islands. The nearest, Aegina, is only an hour away. You can
easily spend a day there - it's quite a large island - and return to Piraeus in the
late afternoon.

Well Athens is a big city, but when your major destination is the islands and Athens
is just the "unavoidable stopover", then 2 days is enough.

How about Mykene, passing by the canal of Korinth? ISTR there are coaches along
that route.

You could get the train to Corinth. Average Greek town when you get there but you do
get to see the Corinthian canal on the way.
You could get a trip down the attikis peninsula to the temple at Sounion.
Or, take the Metro to Pireas and get a regular boat service to Aegina. you will have
a choice of car ferries (Slower) or various flavours of express passenger boats,
faster and more salubrious. Have a look around the place, take an ouzo in a taberna,
get lunch, take a horse buggy ride, take an ouzo in a taberna, think about home, take
another ouzo. Boat ride back.
Idyllic.

Since you'll be seeing the islands (must get to Santorini myself one day!), I'd
suggest going inland. Delphi (the Oracle and all that) has historical/ancient
architectural interest plus the most superb hill secnery.

Re: Day trip from Athens
I think that as long as your final destination is an island (Santorini), it's better to visit either Delphi or Argolis(both, one full day trip from/to Athens).
To go to Sounion and visit the temple of Poseidon is half day (preferably in the afternoon, to see the sunset). It's beautiful.
There are a lot of organized tours departing every day for these places, at very reasonable prices, and I think it's better to book one of these tours as you don't have a lot of time to spend. (i.e. to go to the main train or bus station to cach a train or a bus to go there).
They will pick you up from your hotel, take you wherever you choose, you'll have a professional guide to explain you everything, and take you straight to the most interesting places. They will take you somewhere for lunch, and then back to the front door to your hotel.
If you need help or more information about the organized tours, just ask me.
I live in Athens and I can find more info for you.
