Dangers on the Autostrade

The Italian Motorways are pretty choc-a -bloc with people coming and going
on their holidays at the moment. This is an annual event centred on the
middle of August, Ferragusto. It is most unpleasant to travel any distance
by car in Italy during this period.
To this has been added a new hazard. It seems that there is a revival of
that other traditional Italian spectator sport, throwing rocks onto the
motorway from an overpass.
It seems somebody threw a large rock over the side of a bridge, causing an
accident which killed the driver of the car which it hit and seriously
injured his two passengers. It happened on the A1, Autostrada del Sole, near
Cassino South of Rome.
This was a phenomenon which used to happen regularly a few years ago but
everybody thought it had been brought to an end when they installed fences
on all the motorway bridges and painted the number of the bridge on the side
of the road before and after each bridge so people could call up the
Carabinieri on their mobiles if they saw something suspicious as they drove
along.
It seems it might be starting again. Bon Voyage.

If you avoid the autostrada and take some of the minor scenic routes,
you will find almost no traffic at all in most parts of Italy.

Why go to Italy? You can have the same experience on the A1 going round
Newcastle.
