cycle touring tuscany/umbria
I'm in the process of planning a cycling tour in Italy next year. My first
draft itinerary is as follows:
Ostia - Santa Marinella (65km) - Ponte D Abbadia (71km) - Pitigliano
70km) - Montalcino (76km) - Siena (58km) - Castelfiorentino (59km) -
Firenze (41km) - Poppi (51km) - Sansepolcro (58km) - Gubbio (66km) -
Assisi (48km) - Orvieto (85km) - (somewhere between Orvieto and Rome)
(60km??) - Rome (65km??)
We plan to camp mostly, staying in hotels or affitacamere where there
are no campsites. And definitely hotel in Florence and Rome.
Anyone have any suggestions about things to see, places to stay or
eat, or things to avoid. I'm still deciding on a stop between Orvieto
and Rome, so suggestions welcome there too.
TIA

Follow the old road to Ostia Antica on the coast from Rome, ancient
site fun with bikes, good food at the cafe on the site. Amazing place.

Re: cycle touring tuscany/umbria
Between Orvieto and Rome you can stop in my city
Viterbo
Orvieto - Viterbo (45 km)
Viterbo - Rome (84 km)
That way you'll be able to see two volcanic lakes (Lago di Bolsena and Lago
di Vico), a medieval city (Viterbo) and from Viterbo to Rome, you can see
the beautifull chestnut trees along the Mount Cimino park just all around
the lake of Vico. The lake is inside the park and is totally preserved from
pollution (no motor boats allowed...)
If you're lucky you'll be albe to do some "bird watching"...
Anyway you can always take a swim in the lake... Your skin will be sooo
soft, the water is particularly "sweet"...
Let me know
Bon voyage

Pitigliano is one of the most impressive town of Maremma (Grosseto
province). You can plan to stop there and visit the ancient city which has
been built on a unique small hill by etruscan more than 2100 years ago.
Pitigliano is also known as "Little Jerusalem"
Let me know what do you think of it.
Have a good trip and enjoy Italy
