Couples refused to be married by black

Thu 01/02/07 - At least three couples from the East Flemish city of
Sint-Niklaas have refused to be married in the local Town Hall because
the Alderman who would be in charge of the ceremony is black. Wouter
Van Bellingen of the progressive regionalist party Spirit is currently
Flanders' only black Alderman.
Even before Mr Van Bellingen had been appointed to the post of
Alderman with responsibility for (amongst other things) marriages, the
couples told town hall officials that they didn't want him to marry
them because he is black.
(Belga)
Freddy Willockx
The city's Mayor Freddy Willockx (socialist) has refused to accept the
couples' requests to be married by another (white) Alderman.

He told the daily 'De Morgen' that "This is racism in its crudest
form".

Wouter Van Bellingen, told the paper that he is neither shocked nor
surprised by the couples' refusal to be married by him. He told 'De
Morgen' that "racism is part of life".
"Their problem, not mine!"
The town hall civil servant, who was told by one of the couples that
they didn't want to be married by a black Alderman, told journalists
that "I was not shocked by their reaction. It's their problem and not
mine".

Alderman Van Bellingen says that couples in Sint-Niklaas have three
choices; they can either accept him in his possition, move somewhere
else or not get married.

The Mayor and all the city's Aldermen are 100% behind Mr Van Bellingen
and the overwhelming majority of the people of Sint-Niklaas don't
share the couples' racist views.

Alderman Van Bellingen says that is fully booked until August and has
had to disappoint some couples who wanted him to marry them.
Couples refusal "regrettable"
(Belga)
Jozef De Witte

The Belgian Centre for Equal Opportunities and the Fight Against
Racism says that the couples' refusal to allow a black Alderman to
marry them is "regrettable".

The Centre's Chairman Jozef De Witte told VRT radio that his
organisation is considering what action, if any, can be taken against
the couples.

In the past, the Centre has dealt with complaints from hospitals that
had problems with patients who refused to be treated by someone they
described as a "foreign nurse".

i wonder what these people would do if they had a bad accident in a
"foreign" or "black" country which required an instant operation, i bet they
would shut up and let the medics get the job done

I would want to be completely incapacitated before I allowed something
like that to happen. Better to struggle back to a white nation if
possible.

And he's right! (Let 'em "live in sin" - probably a better

One can only hope so! There are times when reading rather
than hearing a statement leaves room for doubt. (Especially
if it lacks an appended "smiley".) "Tone of voice" plays a
larger part in communication than some of us realize.

DFM has had a hot iron poker up his arse for the last few days. It's a
bit weird, and I'm sure it's painful. I'm awaiting the return to his
usual obnoxious self.
