Default Cost of living comparison between the EU and US?

Been thinking about moving to the EU from the US for a few years. Does
anyone know of a web site with cost-of-living comparisons between the
US and various European countries? (Germany, UK, and France in
particular.) For a person who makes his living in US dollars, I'm
getting the impression that the EU is very expensive these days.
Thanks for any info.

This has very specific info, though I don't know how reliable it is
(sorry about the long URL):

Are prices in the US the same in all the States?

Not at all. CThe same web site given by the previous poster allows you
to compare cost of living in different U.S. cities and states. For
example, in my city a three-bedroom detached house in a nice
neighborhood costs about $170,000. A similar house would cost $450,000
to $500,000 in parts of California.

Thanks for that, Charles - I was in a great hurry and didn't have time to
TinyURL it or find another way through, as you did!

Good point. No, absolutely not. New York and San Francisco
are many times more expensive than the middle of the USA.

Excellent tool, but like you, I wonder how reliable it is too. Thanks.

Depends where you want to live. UK is expensive especially now with the exchange rate - places like London, Cambridge, Leeds are some of the most expensive cities. France is expensive if you want to live in or to the west of Paris, or places like Nice. However it depends on where you're earning. Are you intending to work and live in the EU?

Not terribly reliable, at least when I plug in my current area and a
few other areas with which I am familiar. Moving from Philadelphia,
Pa., to Delaware (state) should result in a decreased cost of living
(based on friends who live there), but the calculator shows it as an
increased cost of living. I tried this with several different areas and
it came out wrong in each instance.

Housing prices vary wildly in the USA by region and even by city.
But other costs of living are pretty constant; e.g., groceries,
etc.

Largely because of housing costs. There are offsetting factors;
e.g., it is not necessary to have a car in New York or San
Francisco.

I disagree. The cost of living, excluding the cost of a house, varies widely
across the USA. There is more than a 100% spread between the highest and
lowest electric rates. State and local taxes vary by hundreds of percent.
Goods may be similarly priced, but service costs vary widely.

I guess I consider electric rates part of housing.

    >State and local taxes vary by hundreds of percent.

HUNDREDs of percent? Examples please. Sales taxes run from zero
to about eight percent; I guess that's hundreds, nay thousands,
percent variation, but it doesn't affect the cost of goods that
much, especially since necessities like food and pharmaceuticals
aren't generally taxed.

    >Goods may be similarly priced, but service costs vary widely.

That they do. Moslty because the people providng the service have
to pay wildly differently for their workplace digs.
