Default Constanta, Romania (Black Sea)

Hi.

I have a vague hankering to go.

Are there any UK travel agents who do flight and hotel packages to
Constanta?

Having had a cursory look, it's easy enough to get to Bucharest, but
then it seems it's a four hour coach ride from there.

I'd rather fly to Constanta airport if possible, starting at any London
airport, although Stansted would be nice (I know, there are no direct
flights - I anticipate changing planes is necessary).

Any thoughts? Anyone been?

TIA,
Martin.

Never made it to the coast but i'd recommend a stopover at least in
Bucharest.

2.5 to 2.75 hour direct train ride (see http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/
and choose "English", or http://www.cfr.ro/default_engleza.htm ). The
basic fare for 218 km from Bucharest Baneasa or Nord stations will cost
you 408,000 lei in first class, 275,000 in second, on an InterCity train
(Hmm, according to the Universal Currency Converter that alarming
looking 408,000 lei is still less than 10 euros....), and the InterCity
supplement for a journey that long is another 219,000 lei 1st class,
158,000 lei 2nd.

I GBP = 62,156.52 lei today, or thereabouts.
1 EUR = 41,318.23 lei, or thereabouts
1 USD = 33,182 lei

are you alright? I spent a week in Bucharest and a week in Constanta,
and while I had a good time, due to some other circumstances, I would
say unequivacably that both places are a dump. However, I am sure
there are nice places in Romania, unfortunately I did not have the
pleasure to see them. I took the train from Bucharest and found it
very comfy. It was winter, so I suppose Constanta in summer would
probably be a wee bit better with all those Romanians partying it up.

I haven't been to Costanca, would like to go, but agree that Bucharest is a
dump. We stayed at the Intercontinental, center of town, and saw one of the
bellmen carrying trash from the hotel to the park in front of the hotel where
he dumped it. Next year saw an intercontinental VP or President receive an
award at the Smithsonian for international environmental awareness.

This poet guy called Ovid visited tha place back when it was
called Tomis and he hated it. Place was full of barbarians so
barbaric they had ice in their beards in the winter.

You cab visit his tomb, the Casino (a patisseur's dream of a
building) and look out over the sea to Romania's best positioned
oil-rig. There's a decent enough fresco on the wall of the church
which sits on top of some ancient baths - complete with beast,
various sinners and all your fave fcharacters from the
Revelation. There's the mosque and Romania's largest "Turkish"
community complete wit restaurants and pictures of Kemal.

For seaside fun you have to go to Mamaia, about 10 km away to the
north. I swam. You have to - I mean, the Argonauts alighted here
you gotta share that water with Orpheus and friends... For some
reason the water was a deep fairy-liquid sort of green colour.
Sand was decent enough - lot's of people, though.

You're not kidding - $1,000 plus! And they all arrive at 11.59 pm, most
convenient!

Perhaps I'll wait until they join the EU...

I believe he was exiled there, not quite the same as a "visit". Could be
why he hated it!!

Should have kept his hands off the emperor's niece... still, if
he had it would have deprived us of some of his very best work.

There are packages from Germany. If you find cheap flights to Germany
avoiding Lautzenhausen/Hahn and Altenburg, there should be a way to do
so.

Romania is quite poupular in the former GDR.

It's a 2h30m train ride from Bucharest to Constanta, then about a 10
minute taxi to Mamaia, the beach resort hotel area north of the city. Go
for it.
