Default Claiming

Today, (24/6/03) me and my partner were due to fly to Alicante for the
duration of 7 days. The flight was due to leave at 15.10 at Teeside Airport,
but my partner found out 1 hour before departing for the airport that her
grandmother had passed away . This was upsetting and distressing, and as a
result, my partner couldn't travel.

As a result i didn't travel neither, my question is, what is the chances of
claiming all the expenses paid for travel for the holiday we booked.

Would we need to provide proof of the deceased, i.e. copy of the death
certificate or any other forms of proof, so we can make the claim?

Any information or personal experiences would be appreciated,

Many Thanks

PC

Sorry to hear of your loss

Phone your Travel insurers asap and ask what documentation they require.

Condolence to your partner. Call the airline immediately and ask them about
getting a refund or a credit for your next flight. Did you cancel your
hotel bookings immediately? If so you shouldn't be liable for any charges.

What other expenses are there?

And my condolences too. Do check the small print of your travel insurance.
Under Cancellation, some policies have rather a restrictive list of a close
relative: parents, children, siblings, spouse. If it doesn't include
grandparents, they could turn down your claim on the ground of
'disinclination to travel'.
I hope it all gets sorted out.

Thanks to you all for the replies so soon..

Apart from the expenses of the Hotel, which was all inclusive, and travel to
and from the airport, there was none, it was a package holiday.

We have been to the travel agents where we booked it, and they have advised
us to contact the insurance company, i'll make sure i give a close look at
the small print in reference to the relatives remark, seems as though that
could be the only downfall.

We didn't contact the airport, we thought it would be best to go direct
through the travel agents, at that time, it was hard to console her and try
and organise everything, whilst trying to be calm.

Again, many thanks for the replies and also the condolences..

Much appreciated

PC: Sorry to hear about your trouble. In general, travel insurance bought
in the UK covers this kind of thing - both for your partner and you. Call
the insurance company ASAP and they will send you a claim form. You will
have to furnish a death certificate and proof that your partner's
grandmother is in fact related to her - this will usually involve providing
birth and marriage certificates for your partner's grandmother, your
partner's mother or father (depending which side it was) and your partner.
If you don't have these documents, then you can contact the General Register
Office at http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/topics/bmd_3.htm (assuming the
partner and family were born in the UK or Ireland - otherwise contact your
consulate).

It's unpleasant to have to deal with this at such a time, but getting the
paperwork together quickly will help your claim.
