Any advice on how to get to the port from Siena? Will have two large
bags and worry about having to lug them up to train platforms. Is there
some combination of bus/train? Or, can one rent a car in Siena without
an exhorbitant drop-off charge when leaving it in Civitavecchia? Any
good advice will be appreciated. E.K.

I wonder if you have read the previous answers. The trip can be done be
train (with taxis in both cities), changing in Grosseto. Check the
timetables as there are not many trains on that routes. But you will
have to lug your bags.

I am living in Grosseto. I don't know how much does rent a car cost but I
think is better to take a bus from Siena to Grosseto and then a train from
Grosseto to Civitavecchia: this is the cheaper and the faster way to reach
the port.
Buses start from Via Tozzi in Siena the companies are TRA-IN (Siena)
http://www.trainspa.it/en/home.html
and RAMA (Grosseto) http://www.griforama.it/it/linee/indic_s.htm
As the bus reach Grosseto it stop at the railway station so you can take a
Intercity train to Civitavecchia which is 90 Km. far.
That's the faster and cheaper way.
