We will be driving in France and Spain soon, and have a cell phone with a
cigarette lighter power adapter. Is the voltage requirement the same in
Europe as in North America, or is the battery voltage different?

Car voltages are the same (12V) and so are the cigarette lighter power
connectors.
The phone, OTOH, may be a problem. There have been lots of discussions on
this forum about that but I've never followed them. (I have a European phone
already). No doubt somebody else will let you know.

Is the question "Do European cars have a 12V DC cigarette lighter
supply?"
The requirements of your cell phone with a cigarette lighter power
adapter won't change.

Well, in my old Citroens, it sometimes went down to something like 4,7 V
in the winter :-/

In those days you could call out an ADAC man with a motor cycle and
side car for 5 pfennig and still have change for a bratwurst and a
litre of good beer. :-)

Battery voltage is ok, but network is different. You need a 900/1800 Mhz
mobile phone, in US frequency is 1900 Mhz.

Thanks -- I have ensured that I have a compatible cell phone. I was just
concerned about re-charging it using the cigarette lighter adapter.
Thanks for all the helpful replies !

You could be in a British car with 'lectrics by Lucas. The prince of
darkness. Maybe zero volts.

No problem, 12 Volts. Depending on the car you might even get an extra
socket somewhere in the car, so you don't need to fumble with the
cigarette-lighter.
