My wife and I are traveling to Dublin on June 8 for a week, and will
have an opportunity to spend one evening in a castle, but must choose
between Ashford Castle or Dromoland Castle ... any suggestions or help
selecting between the two would be most appreciated!

Thats two of the top two castle hotels in Ireland... I have not stayed
in either...If you are staying in Dublin for the week then it is
awkward to travel all that way across country just for a night in a
castle, Both are quite a long distance from Dublin. Circa 3.5 - 4
hours drive, so you are going to be using the night to see other
things in the region. Thats is what you need to consider and your
other travel plans.
Both are in areas of outstanding natural beauty with lots of other
stuff to see.
However if its just the castle stay you are interested in taking up,
Dromoland is very close to Shannon Airport. If you are flying direct
to Dublin from the US then it is extremely likely you have a stopover
in Shannon ( of a few hours) despite that the ticket says
direct.....as they very often dont say this when booking. So check out
your direct flight plans, and if you are landing in shannon go for
dromoland. If not then consider what else you need to see in the area.

I've stayed in Dromoland, and it was quite nice, but I must say I don't
entirely get the point. It's very inconveniently located (can't walk to
anything).

I've stayed in Dromoland and would certainly recommend it -- but not at
Ashford, so am unable to compare them. The point about distance is a good
one, though, especially bearing in mind that travelling across Ireland
always takes longer than it ought to.
Of course, anyone who can afford to stay in these places can probably
afford to charter a chopper from Dublin.![Wink](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)
