Cheapest way to pay small Euro deposit ?
I am trying to book a holiday chalet in Sardinia. They don't take
VISA, MC, Paypal... In fact, they only accept credits direct onto
their local bank account in Oristano.
As the amount is only EUR57.25, I am looking for a cheap and simple way
to pay it. I have their IBAN and all that jazz...
I've tried Western Union, but can't seem to find a way to pay direct
into bank accounts, only to individuals.
My bank of course is only too pleased to help me, if I go down to my
local branch, fill out a long form and pay GBP20.00 for the privilege
!!!
Any ideas ?
Cheers
Nick

I thought under EU law, they could not charge any more for an IBAN than they
would for a credit transfer into a UK account?
Irish banks fleece people at every chance, and even they only charge a small
fee for IBAN transactions - mind you, they had to be forced to, which is why
I believe it is an EU law.

Put the Euro cash in an envelope and post it using the PO _signed for_
service. Works well in my experience. BobS

I think this only applies to accounts and transactions in euros. I guess the
UK account is in pounds sterling, however.

Re: Cheapest way to pay small Euro deposit ?
I just today made a deposit on an apartment in paris for 3 days. And
the electronic bank deposit transfer cost me - 30 Euros. I am not
amused.

Other than book somewhere that accepts credit cards ( at least you have some
come back if anything goes wrong ).
Send cash by registered/recorded post ?

You are correct.
Banks also get aroung the rule by having a low fee to transfer
to an account with the same bank and a much higher fee for
transfer to a different bank. Of course there are few banks with
branches in more than one country.

ATM cards work that way, too 8-( I have a debit card I use for cash
when traveling to avoid the instant interest penalty my "normal"
Mastercard imposes for cash, but there's a fee for not using the ATM's
of that bank, which has NO branches in Europe.

You need an ATM card from a bank or financial institution that
doesn't charge for transactions at European ATMs jsut because
they aren't that bank's.

Thanks for your contributions.
The clock was ticking, so I've swallowed the bank charges and made an
international payment <GULP>.
When I get there, I'll have a chat with the manager about accepting
PayPal !!!

If you know you will be going again the next year, why not book provisional
dates, pay the manager your deposit , then re confirm the exact dates when
you get home ?
