cheap ways to get from Berlin to Amsterdam?
Both trains and buses are quite pricey from Berlin to Amsterdam. Are
there cheaper buses that do this route, or should I stick my thumb out
on the highway?

There are (or were, a couple years ago) some cheapish Polish buses that left
from a station on the edge of town. I could find it if I were on foot but I
wouldn't know how to explain how to get there. It's worth asking around.

If you mean scheduled buses Poland - Amsterdam it's likely that they don't
officially carry passengers Germany - Amsterdam. However, it might be
possible to travel on those buses "without ticket"...

Exactly. The drivers were taking passengers for cash. I guess they dropped
off passengers in Berlin and had extra spaces.

Hmm, I find bus fares around UR 50,- one way.
http://www.berlinlinienbus.de/ort/80000108001760.htm
Is that still too expensive?

Hmm, the "hitchhiking culture" isn't what is used to be 15 or 20 years ago.
Fewer hitchhikers around, and drivers are less inclined to give lifts. For
short distances it might be a worthwhile experiment. But that long distance
you're looking at several unpredictable hops, waits at inconvenient
motorway exits, motorway restaurants at night ...

Well, let me suggest one crazy itinerary. Assuming that VBird does not
go bankrupt (hope not): take the 10:30 flight from Berlin Schoenefeld
to Niederrhein (Monday-Friday); from Niederrhein airport, take the
14:30 bus to Arnhem; from there, continue by train to Amsterdam (a bit
over 1 hour).
On the way back, be in time at Arnhem for the 11:45 bus to Niederrhein
Airport (no later buses!); then take the 14:00 flight to Berlin (any
day).
Likely price for the flight - 58 Euro all inclusive, plus 19 Euro for
the bus, plus 21.80 return for the train (or 13.00 if you qualify for
reduction). In total 90-100 Euro for the whole trip.
V Bird flight booking: www.vbird.com
Airport Niederrhein bus timetables:
http://www.flughafen-niederrhein.de/...iederrhein.htm
If you prefer hitchhiking, do it from Niederrhein (but not on the way
back, as you may get stuck).

Taking the train from Berlin to Amsterdam might be cheaper and easier than
this complicated itinerary.

If you can travel on a Saturday or Sunday:
With the HappyWeekendTicket (EUR 28,-) on local trains to Bad Bentheim (last
stop in Germany), from there with a normal ticket to Amsterdam. slightly
faster and cheaper than by bus.
Esp. if you can find some co-travellers - the HappyWeekendTicket is valid
for up to 5 people travelling together.
Berlin - Bad Bentheim needs with local trains 7:41; 3 changes. Trains leave
hourly in Berlin-Charlottenburg at 05:23, 06:23, ... With the exception of
10:23.

The night train Berlin -Koln can be had for as low as EUR 29,-. The day
train for EUR 50,- (return, but you don't have to use the return portion...)
Koeln - Amsterdam is EUR 47,- on the ICE, full price. It is quite
probably possible to get this cheaper through advance booking, but I do
not have details about that.
