Charles de Gaulle to Montpellier?
Can anybody reccomend the easiest way to make the trip from Charles de
Gaulle to Montpellier, around mid-September? It seems that any flight from
CDG to MPL is expensive and it doesn't seem worth it to travel to Orly.
Can take the TGV but besides the 4 hour trip after the long flight, 2 of us
are older and wrestling the bags onto the shuttle, down the elevator and
onto the train doesn't appeal very much.
Finally there is the choice of getting the car at CDG and not in Montpellier
and just driving, but that would mean stopping somewhere half way there and
staying a night.
So anybody have any fiendishly brilliant suggestions?

Not a fiendishly brilliant suggestion, but I don't know why you say it
isn't worth it to travel to Orly for the plane to Montpellier. It is a
bit of a slog after a long flight, but it's worth it to go to
Montpellier!!
Probably the pain is similar for the train option. I'd suggest you fly,
depending on what your arrangements are at the other end, bearing in
mind that Montpellier airport is a little way outside the town.

Why not check out if your airline has a better connection to Montpellier
airport via another hub?
The Montpellier airport website is
http://www.montpellier.aeroport.fr/l....asp?nav=0_0_0
This also shows that KLM flies from CDG so why not try that?
Where are you flying in from and with which airline? Maybe there is a
stopover on the way which is convenient and cheap.
Try thinking outside the square!

I usually fly to Montpellier from Gatwick. Perhaps that might be a better
hub to fly into than CDG? Prices do vary a lot though. Last time, I saved
£300 (more than my actual fare) on two tickets by flying mid-week instead of
at the weekend. It is usually best to book online through the BA web site,
where you can view what prices are available for different days.

Bypass Paris and fly into Marseilles? Then take the train.
(Airport-to-train via taxi would be the easiest, but there is a bus.)

How hard is it and how long does it take? Two of us are older and we will
have a number of bags.

I know that it is probably too late, but next time look into booking
straight through, you will be surprised that a ticket to somewhere in
France is not really much more than a ticket to CDG and yet it is sooooo
much more convenient.

The trouble comes in trying to decide if you want the train from CDG or
let AF have you transfer to Orly for the next flight segment.
And then trying to figure the rail schedules. I suspect that I would
wait to book until I was at CDG.

I'm going to MPL in November and was faced with similar choices. It
turned out much cheaper to fly into Marseilles (MRS), then take a short
train ride into Montpellier. Toulouse was even a little cheaper than
MRS but it seems the train ride is longer.

Just took the TGV from Paris to Marseille; 3 hours, 0 minutes; I can't
imagine wanting to fight my way from CDG to Orly and then to
Montpelier -- that's what counts as a loonnnng day in my books. Take
the train, and stay overnight in Marseille if necessary; I found the New
Hotel:Old Port both cheap and comfortable.
