Would like to know about free events, best days to be there, weather, etc.
during Carnevale in Venice. Is it worthwhile? I am not looking for a Rio
or New Orleans type of Carnival. Am mostly interested in
costumes,pageantry..Any recommendations or experiences to share would be
most welcome. Have been in Venice many times and speak the language.Met
someone once who went twice and loved it. Hotel suggestions or B&B also
welcome. Grazie

Essentially everything is free at the Carnevale in Venice. I published
a trip report about a visit to Carnevale a few years ago. I can't find
the original article in the google archives, but I found a later one
which quotes it in its entirety:

This trip was in 1999, but I don't think much has changed since then.

The last few days tend to be far and away best. The weather tends to
be lousy. Snowed last year. Rained the year before. No flooding to
speak of. Rooms are very high compared to other times of year.

Last year was a very atypical spring. Snow would be very unusual,
although rain is always a possibility. The weather is often very nice
at that time of the year.
