Default Car Rental Suggestions - Milan.

Landing in Milan at Malipensa (spelling?). Car rental rates look pretty
expensive. Anyone have any good suggestions for car rentals in Milan? So
far, the best rates have been at autoeurope.com

Also, I have been doing some research on car rental insurance and it scares
me a bit. It doesn't look like there is any coverage available or included
that covers the cost of hitting a person of object other than a vehicle.
Anyone know what I'm talking about???

Thanks,
Frank

Doesn't third party insurance cover hitting a person?

Use taxis in Milan instead of a hire car, it works out cheaper.

If going to larger cities in Italy, you do not want a car. Take
trains, busses, and taxis. There is no place to park, any parking
will be very expensive, and you may not be allowed to drive in the
city anyhow, and even if you can, you may not want to, once you try.

A car is necessary if touring the countryside.

There is about a 10% airport pickup tax. Rates in Italy are amoung
the higest in Europe.

AutoEurope has close to the best rates, do list all inclusive prices,
and have in town pickups and drop offs. There is usually no
additional charge to pick up in one city in Italy, and drop off in
another city in Italy.

The problem you see in the insurance can be very real. You run over a
highway divider, and rip off the bottom of the car, there is a good
chance it is not covered.

third party insurance is compulsory in Europe
Not only it covers all the people you might hit, but even yr passengers
provided they are not first degree relatives.
I agree you cannot use car in Milano.
there is a bus leaving about every 15 minutes from the Airport to the main
train station. in about 45 minutes.
a car can be rented in Italy for about 35 eur/day unlimited mileage.

Thanks for the advice. I actually need the car because I am touring the
Northern Italy countryside and I plan on a day trip to Switzerland.

If you're not from the US or Canada then http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/
may be helpful. If you are then they won't rent to you.

How or where near Milan do you get a car for €35 inclusive, per day?
Autoeurope, which is usually competitive shows a Fiat Punto, which is
barely a car, for €315/week?

Well you can rent a car for 35 euro a day or cheaper but it's all the taxes,
airport charges, and insurance that raises the rates. I ended up getting a
fair deal with Auto Europe and it includes all the insurance. I saved about
$75 on the vehicle with them.

Yes, you can get a cheaper car elsewhere without the CDW or other addons.
But if you crash the car, do you really trust a credit card overseas to
cover your CDW?

Holiday Auto has the Punto for 153 pounds.

All prices are fully inclusive of unlimited mileage, third party
insurance, cdw , theft waiver, airport surcharge, bail bonds (where
needed) and all local taxes.

Alas they will not rent to US or Canadian residents.

Like many european cities that applies to the centre only. Where
of course your tourist interest places usually are.

I use Europcar, I pay the theft and damage waivers for the
excesses, are you saying if I wreck the car i'm not covered? Can
you point me to more details?

This page is on the city of Milan website and should list all the car
rentals available in the city:
http://www.turismo.comune.milano.it/pls/milano/!turismo?pid=30901

I live close to Milan and never rent a car there. When I needed to rent
a car in Italy I rent from Sixt (www.esixt.it).

Usually this kind of coverage is provided as an option and doesn't
cover damage for caresness (e.x: leaving the car with no handbrake on a
steep climb), or criminal offences (driving while drunk or under
drugs).
If you plan to drive to switzerland, check that this is allowed by the
renting company, or if it requires particular documentation or (maybe)
an extra fee.
To drive on switzerland's highways you need a sticker that costs 40
euros. You can but it at the border. You may try to ask for a car that
already has the sticker. If you plan to drive to Lugano or Bellinzona,
you can go there by regular roads, so you don't need the sticker.

How do you rent a car in Italy(not elsewhere, but Italy) without CDW
and taxes?

The collision damage waiver is an expensive optional extra, if it's
not taken, the hirer pay for any damage found on the car when it's
returned, in the worst case for a new car if the hirer causes an
accident which results in the car being written off.

One problem with renting from a small cheaper car hire company is that
they don't have the same network to support the hirer. If the car
breaks down or is involved in an accident the hirer may have to wait
hours for a replacement.

Never lock yourself out of a Hertz car in Bavaria, the spare keys, if
any, are kept in Hanover.
