I think thats what I meant, stations dedicated to types of music.

rock, pop, jazz, blues and folk is only "somewhat limited" to someone
who has closed thier mind to anything outside radio 3.

They get played on London stations, I dont know the stations in the
areas you went to, but I know some local stations elsewhere are in a
time warp!

Not at all.
My personal preferences include Classic FM, too, although talk radio is,
to me, far preferable.

As a long, long-time listener to Radio 3, I'd hesitate recommending it
even to classically-minded friends without a few caveats.
It's only in the last couple of years that the programmers seemed to
stop insisting that for every interesting harmonic piece, we had to
endure at least two or three well-nigh-unlistenably obscure "cutting-
edge" sound experiments.
For a lot of years, it was a hard slog being a Radio 3 listener.....it
still is, sometimes.
On the other hand, I find Classic FM a strange combination of annoying
(naff ads, which seem too-often repeated) and boring (generally
speaking, the play-list seems unimaginative). Whenever I've tried it,
I find I'm turning back to Radio 3 within 10 or 15 minutes.
(For what it's worth, I've found that CBC Radio 2 from Toronto -- which
you can listen to over the Internet -- does a really good balancing act
between the two extremes.)

Yes, If we must have ads, at least let them be well written.
