Default Car hire UK

I have arranged to pick up a Focus 1.6 LX from Hertz Marble Arch.
Can anybody tell me if this car has a CD player.
I have received conflicting information, and I don't want to bring a
heap of CD's from Oz and find I can't play them.

Thanks

No car hire company will guarantee the precise model that you will end up
with. You may have booked a focus but you could end up with anything that
is equivalent or better. Furthermore, the cars that rental companies buy
are not always identical to the ones that are available on the open market.
That said, most cars at that level do carry a CD player so the risk of not
getting one is small. If you do happen to get one without a CD it will
almost certainly have a tape player which means you could bring a CD player
(and use it on the plane) then, if your car does have a tape, buy one of
those cheap converter thingies and plug your CD player in.

You know of course you won't be guaranteed a Focus. You could end up with an
Astra, or Corolla etc..

However I would be extremely suprised if it didn't have a CD player. All
cars of this class I've hired have had one.

The obvious answer is of course.. ring Hertz and tell them to make a note on
the rental saying CD player required.

You might get any similar car, at the moment about 50% of cars seem to
have CD. I would email them and ask what % cars that class have CD and
can you make a special request for one that does. It might work.

And you will need them in the UK. I recently returned from 3 days
touring in northern Wales and Lancashire and the state of music being
played on the radio was appalling. Now I know why all the roadway
services sell CDs and tapes. If you like talk radio however, the
selection is much better. I had a small Ford also rented from Hertz
and it had a CD player. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks to all respondents, I think the consensus is that I should
bring some CD's.
I did email Hertz, but received no reply.

Radio 3 has excellent music. One wonders what your taste (?) is.....

Yes, theres a wide range of radio but no many stations locked into one
narrow band of pop music as in, say, US. Perhaps that was the problem.
Some areas dont have great up to the minute pop stations. Cornwall for
instance.

I rented a 1.4 Escort a few years ago and had it upgraded to a 1.6
which is what I wanted in the first place but decided the extra
price would take me a bit out of my budget...

You could take your own 12v powered CD player with a small FM
transmitter. That would cover all bases. Might be a pain to
cover up at each stop though.

My solution was to not listen to music not on the radio.

Just about anything except tone-deaf children shrieking over a
synthesized rhythm. I like rock and pop music mostly but also enjoy
folk, jazz and blues. I can't understand how bands like Coldplay,
Blur, Oasis, REM, Travis, etc. can be so popular in the UK when I
didn't hear them on the radio at all, nor did I find a station that I
thought might eventually play them. I like rock from the 60's, 70's
and 80's as well and didn't once come across a station playing those.

Don't know what your knowledge of radio in the US is, but speaking for
where I live, in the Boston area, I couldn't disagree with you more.
I can choose from 3 stations that play a combination of
punk/metal/alternative, 2 that play adult contemporary/folk, 2 that
play pop/techno/soul and then there are rap stations, college stations
that play everything from jazz, rap, reggae, chamber, local bands,
etc., at least 3 oldies stations covering the 50's through the 80's.
And that's just the FM band. On AM, there's 24-hour
news/sports/weather stations, 2 sports talk stations, political talk
stations, and a couple of Latino stations.
Of course, I primarily listen to CDs in my car anyway because I like
Brit-rock and pop, which is about the only thing that I can't easily
find here

I suppose that is what some people want. I fond it strange, however.

Well, that is somewhat limited. Perhaps you should try classical music.

"Just about anything" is an unusual definition of "limited".
