car hire in Germany

I'm a little disappointed by the rates I'm getting at the usual big
travel websites for auto rental at Frankfurt Airport in late March: $220
per week or so.

Any tips for lesser-known companies or websites?

Dennis,

Are you asking for an automatic or a manual transmission?

Manual. I assumed that would be the better price, although I also know
how to drive an automatic ;)

You're going to have a problem finding anything much cheaper than $220
per week.

Try: http://www.cityrent-frankfurt.de or http://www.e-sixt.de/
