Default Can I bring my FRS / GMRS Radio to Europe - Austria, Germany, Switzerland

I just bought a pair of Motorola Talkabout 200's FRS / GMRS radios and
planning on bringing them to Europe (i.e. Austra, Germany and
Switzerland). Does anyone know if FRS legally being used in those
countries? If so, if I purchase a GMRS license, am I going to be
benefitted from the longer range reception from the GMRS in Europe?

Thanks!

The frequency allocations are different in Europe. While I am not an
expert on this, I believe the answer is "No." However, you often see
Americans, who know no better, running around European cities with FRS
radios. I have yet to see any of them go to jail.

FRS and GRMS are NOT legally usable in the UK and Europe, the EU equivalent
is the PMR446 Pan European Radio system which uses similar
(often the same) models as FRS but chipped for a different frequency.

US FRS frequencies often interfere with emergency services bands in Europe,
so please don't use them. You can pick up PMR446 set for as little as 50
euro, useable through most of Europe. Cheapest perhaps in Germany.

At the moment the German discounter-chain "Aldi" is selling a pair of PMR's
for 29 EUR! They are built by Stabo, but marketed under a different name.

FRS are illegal to use in Germany and if you get caught it can get
expensive, as they charge you the costs for tracking you down (at least
1000 EUR).

Frank
