Default Cairo/ Luxor

Hi All

My wife & I plan to take a cruise from Luxor to Cairo stopping at
Esna, Aswan, and Abu Simbel We then stay a week in Cairo.
I know this is not exactly "Europe Travel" but I'm sure that many
"European Travellers" will have visited this famous part of the world

We would very much appreciate your personal recommendations about things
absolutely not to miss - museums, restaurants, cafes with great ambience

Look forward to your valued comments

Best regards and Happy New Year to all "Travellers"!

the cruises normaly sail from Luxor to Aswan (and back) they dont usually
sail Luxor to Cairo - check your itenery - you may be flying that bit ! (or
missing Cairo !!)

Things to miss - restaurants and cafes !!

Normally the cruises have a planned tour agenda.

Ask some more questions on the Luxor-Aswan bit and I'll try to answer them
next week as I am about to leave for somewhere not as exotic :-)

P.S. - The cruises dont normally stop at Abu Simbel either - there is a big
dam at Aswan that the ships cant get through - you either fly from Aswan to
Abu Simbel, or take a 4ish hour coach ride at a frightening speed through
the desert in an armed convey.

Much more fun than boring old Europe....

When I was there in 1999, it wasn't acually possible to sail very far
north of Luxor for security reasons. Also, no overland travel to Abu
Simbel, it had to be a plane trip. Also for security- but I think that
has relaxed a bit now.

    > Things to miss - restaurants and cafes !!

There are some good ones, though some of the restaurants I'd recommend
for the view/ambience more than the food- which was fine FWIW. One is
the revolving restaurant at the top of Cairo Tower. It's hard to think
of a restaurant I've been in with a more commanding view! Also, within
Cairo itself, the dinner cruises with entertainment from local dancers,
while undeniably touristy, are actually a lot of fun IMO. There's also a
restaurant I was at in Cairo (I read about it in Let's Go) that served
pigeon that was very good.

Yes, this can be a problem for some people, though usually the tour
guides are very good. I'd recommend trying to get at _least_ a day to
yourself to explore.

Also, I think rec.travel.africa is probably the best place for this-
follow-ups set accordingly.

Yep - the Luxor/Aswan cruises are usually extremely pre-planned.
If you get half a chance to escape, I'd suggest:

CAIRO
You may find the usual half-a-day at Giza not enough - but it's pretty close
to the centre, so you can hop back there any time if you wish. Early
morning/late afternoon non-touristy camel rambles around the area are
fantastic. The Sphinx is there too, of course. Prepare yourselves for Cairo
cabs and traffic!!
Spend at least half-a-day in the Cairo souks if you like that sort of thing.
Historically, there are some even older pyramids nearby (cab run or maybe
tours). The Step Pyramid is well worth seeing. Not as big, but a forerunner
of the big 'uns.
The National Museum is in Cairo - ENORMOUS!!. And exhausting! Half-a-day
killed us but it needs more. Don't just wander around, you'll get nowhere in
a long time. Check your guidebook for the bits you want to see - Tut's
treasure, Mummy Room, etc. - and plan it a bit.
There are one or two big good Cairo mosques - you can't miss 'em.
The 'City of the Dead' is fascinating - but get a guide or tour for that, it
can be 'dodgy'.
You might be able to get a tour trip to Suez - it's not that far, but we
travelled via.

Lots of great stuff between Luxor and Aswan (I assume that's your route?)
but you'll probably be escorted everywhere. We found we preferred the
above-ground temples to the famous Valley of the Kings tombs, but you'll
probably see both. Karnak is absolutely fabulous if you have to choose
between that and Luxor itself. The Son et Lumiere, however, we found very
disappointing.
There's a fabulous temple at Dendera(?) just north of Luxor and often
therefore missed by the boat trips which go south. Try it if you can.
We LOVE Aswan - stacks to see 'off the track'. Temple of Philippi (now on an
island near the dam) is a nice trip if you'd otherwise miss it. And the
island with Lord Kitchener's aboretum is a very pleasant (and cool) stroll.
You can visit Nubean villages nearby. St. Simon's Monastery is an
adventurous sand scramble the other side of the river, but gives you a great
'desert' feel. If you have the option you MUST take the Abu Simbel trip from
there (quite a surprising way away, actually, near the Sudan border!). You
can do a half-day flight trip Aswan-Simbel.
If you've any specifics to check, don't hesitate to ask.
Just enjoy - it's fabulous.

Yes, a world famous picture that- the Sphinx with the Pyramids in the
bakground. Of course if you turn around 180 degrees the view is less
fantastic- you're 100 feet away from a Pizza Hut and KFC! :)

Thanks for your help. I guess a view of a map would leave us slightly less
dis-orientated. :-)

Have a good trip

Try visiting this site:

http://egypt.infohome.dk/

I made a site out of a couple of trips down that way - including Abu
Simbel.

http://www.pharaohegypt.com/

and all it has are some non smoking rooms.

If the restaurant is non smoking why are there ash trays on the
tables? http://www.pharaohegypt.com/restaurant-3.jpg

Nice zero gravity facility.

Nope. Restaurants have been banned there, along with cars.
