Default Caen / Bayeux rental cars on Sundays....????

Hello all.... will be in Paris November 12 & 13, leaving for Bayeux on Sunday
the 14th. I was hoping to take the train there and rent a car for 3 days. On
the 17th was going to go back to Paris for the return Eurostar train back to
London.

Checking the websites, I find that the major rental agencies (Hertz, Avis,
Kemwel) are all closed on Sundays. This leaves me renting from Hertz on Sunday
from Gare du Nord and driving to Bayeux. I already plotted my route out of
Paris using http://www.viamichelin.com and while it seems like quite the
adventure, I will be travelling with my wife who tends to panic while I drive
here in Los Angeles, so I can just image her on this adventure... I told her
she would have to help navigate ...! I will also have a 2 year old and a 4
year old to add to the mix.....

Any ideas on car rental in Caen or Bayeux on a Sunday....? I am just as
willing to take the train north and rent up there..... although after reading
all the past posts about driving in Paris, I may just want to take up the
challenge and drive out of Paris..............(although avoiding the Arc de
Triumphe roundabout... this time....!) Any advice....?

Thanks all....!

I would rent the car at Gare du Nord, then head north to the peripherique,
then go counterclockwise to the A14 which turns into the A13 which will take
you straight to Bayeux.

On a Sunday traffic should be light, so you should be in Bayeux in about 3
hours. The rest areas usually have playgrounds to wear the kids out. My
daughter wanted to stop at every rest area!

You will find it a lot easier to drive in Paris than LA, because most people
are using public transport instead of their own cars, but I agree with you
about avoiding the Arc de Triumphe roundabout, and anywhere within the
peripherique.

If you havn't booked your hotel in Bayeux yet, the Novotel
www.accorhotels.com allows for 2 kids to stay for free in the room, which is
rare in France, since most only allow for 1.

Ulf,

Thanks for the suggestions.... but it is looking like Gare du Nord for us....!

Tim, thanks for the response.... I'm actually looking forward to the drive
now, the more I think about it,,,, maybe just to check out the rest stops I've
heard so much about.... and we have accomodations already..... b&b south of
bayeux.... http://www.bandbnormandie.com/pages/1/index.htm

Near Villers Bocage.....should be perfect w/ the car for beaches, Mt. St.
Michel, etc.......

Once again, thanks for the replies.....

Take a look at www.cpmac.com/normandy before coming.

Do a Google search on Whitman and Villers Bocage aswell. Whitman was a
german tank commander who wiped out a column of Britishtanks at Villers
Bocage. The road where it took place was the normal road going towards Caen.
Just at the top of the first rise.

On the way to Bayeux just by Chouain there's the smallest cemetery;
Jerusalem 47 graves including 3 chaplains.

Villers Bocage was flattened during the war so it has no particuler charm.
Central for MnT St Michel and the beaches though. - Bayeux on the other
hand - a delightfull town.

To give the wife a little more peace, get a car with a GPS navigator.
