I am looking for info on travel costs in France, including a daily allowance
for food, transport, tips, etc. Does anyone know of a site that contains
this type of information?

This sort of thing is really better answered by asking your self some
questions such as how much do I want to spend. A minimum figure won't be
worht anything to you unless you enjoy minimalist travel and a luxury
trip may scare you.
Find your preference for hotel comfort and start there.
Breakfast can run from a couple of euro for a coffee and croisant in a
stand up coffee shop to 15 or more euro in a hotel.
Lunches and dinners are the same. 4 euro to 400.

I agree with jcoulter. What is your basic comfort level?
That said, 50 Euros per day is possible just about anywhere in Europe on a
shoestring budget. You can sleep in a hostel (20 Euros say), eat
supermarket/kiosk food (10-15 Euros), and get the cheapest local transit
pass (whatever). You will even have a few Euros left for attractions.

Hi
If you hitchike, stay in hostels, but food from markets & supermarkets, limit spending on attractions : you may be able to live for Euro 30 / day.
More realistically allow Euro 50, for a bit more convenience & comfort.
There are plenty of small restaurants offering a set midday meal at around 10 Euros.
