Budapest to Vienna
Is it worth contemplating a day trip to, say, Vienna from Budapest? I
am assuming the train time is about 3 hours (similar to Manchester to
London). Given that one would probably need several days in Vienna,
would one day be enough to do anything worthwhile?

One day is better than nothing at all, but three would be better.

I suspect that the train journey takes more than 3 hours, but I'll
leave it to you to check it out if you pursue the idea.
In a portion of a day you could take a tram trip around the
Ringstrasse (a moderately useful overview), make quick visit to
Stephansdom, have a coffee (of course) and give a couple of hours to
one major site of interest such as Hofburg. And you would omit some
things that might be classed as must-dos.
I suggest that you save Vienna for a future visit, and give it 3 days
or more.
There is plenty in Budapest to keep you interested, and if you get the
urge to do a trip out of town, there are more convenient good
destinations.

Should be two hours - it's not a big distance.
