Hello all you well traveled people-
I have been hearing more and more about Bratislava -cheap and charming
but the guide books say different. Is it worth visiting while in Vienna
as an overnighter or day trip.
any thoughts?

Whilst there is nothing really wrong with Bratislava, it is one of the most
forgettable capitals in Europe. OK, there is an impressive castle there, and
some museums, but does not compare to Prague, Vienna or Budapest in any way.
As for the cheap part, the restaurants around the center of the town are not
particularly cheap. Definitely cheaper that Vienna though.
Alternatively, visit Trencin, Kosice or Levoca. These places really are
cheap and pleasant.

Commenting on Deep . . . :
If you consider going so far as Levoca, one could, just as well, from
Vienna go west or south and see all that Austria has to offer.
I would suggest omitting Bratislava and consider, as mentioned
previously, Budapest, and around Budapest, such as Szentendre, Estergom,
etc. And/or Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz (where one might see the
concentration camp Mauthausen) and Graz. Of course, the Salzkammergut
(the lake region around Salzburg).
Go to an abbey in Austria, such as St. Florian and Melk.

Thanks for the advice. I actually study your posts because they always
steer me in the right direction, offer good and interesting info and
seemed to be based on sanity :-)

Thanks for the reply -- I was wondering about the recent 'hype'
concerning Bratislava and since I had to shave some days off my trip I
want to be sure to seek some expert advice. I will consider those other
options you mentioned.
