Bierhaus in 1950's Germany?
My Dad had few proud possessions, but one was a rather plain pair of
Leiderhosen he brought back from USAF service in Germany during the early 1950's. Still wore them regularly in the Summer for many years after... In doing some trip genealogy research I stumbled into some old photo's he took while there; the usual stuff, US servicemen standing together and waving, hoisting a mug and such. Then the story came back to me... "Meir Gustles" (sp?) was the name; the beery song they sang was still repeated occasionally in kind... Something about "der grossen elephantisteer and what he did with sandpapir"...<g> Anyone have any notion as to where this place was, exact name and if it still exists? One picture showed a large gauge antique model train setup running on tracks around the perimeter of the ceiling... Is it possible to still walk in those Fifty plus year old tracks of my Father and hoist a mug under the same model train? Tim K |

This is getting a little neat kind of weird!
Visiting with my mom this weekend I mentioned the subject of my trip. Brother digs up an old box she sends him for in the attic which contains my dads old souvenirs, photo's, etc; a young Air Force Corporal in reconstruction Germany 1952. The old drinking buddy photo emerges, remembering myself as a child sitting beside dad as he told me the story that I remember but fragments of today. A *postcard* from the very place in question I didn't remember! Maier Gustl's Frankfurt a. M., Munchener Strafze 57, We also figure there is a second establishment of the same name/owner(s?) in Munich, but the postcard picture shows the marquee "Maier Gustle's - Oberbayern". Can anyone confirm if this establishment still exists? Second item of great interest was a story I was never told...<g> I know dad visited somewhat distant relatives in some small town north of Winterswijk, but a pamphlet jumped out at me I never saw before... the "21 Maart 27 Maart 1952 Amsterdam" 15 cent town guide; mainly merchant guide of the Kalverstraat. It appears the sexiest thing advertised openly is Palo, purveyor of hosiery and lingerie "Nylon our Specialty" appearing below a gracefully clad set of legs Kalverstraat 200... It also appears the strongest smoke sold in town is Dutch tobacco Wasmann, the Old Dutch pipe store, Reguliersbreestraat 7...<g> So as circumstances continue to unfold, almost exactly 52 years after 1952, I will walk some of the same streets my father did... as his great, great, great Grandfather did...
